Maritime Edged By MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Maritime College football team played its final road game of the 2026 season on Saturday afternoon.  After MIT took the lead midway through the fourth quarter, the Privateers (2-7, 0-6 NEWMAC) were stopped on a 4th-and-goal, allowing the Engineers (5-2, 3-2 NEWMAC) to come away with a 21-14 victory at Steinbrenner Stadium.

MIT picked up a Maritime fumble with 8:50 left in the contest, then needed just two plays to go ahead.  Michael Dennison's 55-yard TD catch put the Engineers in front 21-14 at the 8:13 mark.  Eddie Crishom (Jamaica, NY) returned the kickoff 28 yards, giving the Privateers good position at the MIT 40.  Maritime moved to the Engineers' 10, setting up a 1st-and-goal.  However, after a 1-yard rush by Gianni Spinelli (Holtsville, NY), two incomplete passes brought up fourth down.

On 4th-and-1, Jaden Rotella (Mt. Sinai, NY) was sacked by Wyatt Alford and MIT took back over with 2:15 left.  Jimmy Conners then ran the ball five consecutive times, gaining two first downs, as the Engineers ran out the clock on a 21-14 triumph.

Rotella finished 13-for-21 through the air for 96 yards and two touchdowns.  He also ran 17 times for 37 yards.  Spinelli gained 63 yards on 19 carries to go along with 26 receiving yards and a score on four catches.  Enrique Hernandez (Northport, NY) paced Maritime with nine receptions for 27 yards and a TD.  Defensively, Luca Siebert (Warwick, NY) led the way with nine tackles.  He added a pass breakup.  Simon Wareham (Oceanside, NY) and Peter Banculli (North Babylon, NY), meanwhile, contributed eight tackles apiece.

Each of the Privateers' first two drives ended in punts before MIT capped its second with the game's first touchdown.  Brendan Spellman ran 55 yards to paydirt, putting the Engineers in front.  MIT took that 7-0 advantage into halftime.

An Engineers fumble on the second half kickoff was recovered by Christopher Mancz (Floral Park, NY), giving Maritime possession at the MIT 33.  The Privateers took advantage of the short field, and Rotella capped the six-play march with a three-yard TD strike to Spinelli.  Maritime then went in front when Rotella connected with Hernandez from two yards out with 6:23 left in the third quarter.  However, the Engineers responded with a nine-play, 73-yard drive that ended on a game-tying 18-yard touchdown run by Connors.

Connors tallied 86 rushing yards on 14 carries.  Spellman added 79 yards on seven rushing attempts.  Treptow, meanwhile, finished 7-for-12 for 125 yards and a score.  Ezekiel Dube-Garrett made two catches for 42 yards.  Thomas Shoales notched 10 tackles, three of which went for a loss, including 1.5 sacks.  In addition to picking up a fumble, Alford made eight tackles and had a sack.  Chase Fishman contributed three tackles for loss and a forced fumble for MIT.

After playing nine consecutive games, the Privateers will enjoy a week off before their season finale.  Springfield (7-1, 5-0 Skyline) will visit Reinhart Field at 12 p.m. on Nov. 14.
