Marcus Spearman

Marcus Spearman returns for his third season with the Maritime football coaching staff in 2018.

Spearman will serve as Linebackers Coach, and will also serve in the capacity of Equipment Operations.

During his second term with the program, Spearman helped lead the defensive unit to the third best defense in the ECFC as the unit allowed 17.9 points per game and 281.8 yards per game. Following the conclusion of the team’s nine-win season, a pair of linebackers earned All-Conference honors.

In Spearman’s first year with the team, Maritime had one linebacker earn All-League honors as the defensive unit as a whole allowed just 292.2 yards per game and also yielded 22.5 points per game, both were second best in the conference.

An experienced defensive line coach, Spearman will bring his knowledge to Maritime coming from West Virginia Wesleyan College after serving as the Defensive Line Coach from the spring of 2013 through the fall of 2014. He also served as Assistant Defensive Line Coach from April of 2012 through January of 2013 before assuming the head position.

No stranger to West Virginia Wesleyan, Spearman was a linebacker with the Bobcats for two seasons. The former Division II player saw time in 20 games over his two years with the team, which saw him accumulate 12 sacks and 45 career tackles. His nine sacks during his senior year were 15th best in all of NCAA Division II in 2013.

Prior to his stop at West Virginia Wesleyan as both a coach and a player, Spearman was a member of the Lackawanna College football program for parts of two seasons with the Falcons. In his two seasons in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Spearman helped the team to 12 wins over two seasons in 2011 and 2012.

The Newburgh, New York native prepared for his collegiate career as a four-year starter at Newburgh Free Academy in Orange County, New York. While at Newburgh Free, Spearman was a two-year captain and also earned numerous postseason accolades including three All-State honors.

Spearman graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan with his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in December of 2015.
