THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Entering the 2016 season, the Maritime Football Team will look to improve upon its record from a season ago and contend for its second Eastern Collegiate Football Conference Championship.

Under the direction of 12th-year head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, the Privateers will blend a strong returning cast with a crop of talented incoming freshmen and newcomers to the team in search of the title.

The Privateers return seven of their 13 All-Conference honorees including First and Second-Team selections Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), Thomas Korwan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh).

Korwan and Price will serve as two of the team's four captains on the season and will be joined by All-ECFC Honorable Mention linebacker Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) and senior Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford).

Offense
With the departure of the record-setting quarterback Zack Chilcott '16 under center, Maritime's offense will run through junior Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Last season, Wright passed for 60 yards and one touchdown in limited action as the primary backup to Chilcott.

Amongst the returners, sophomores Joseph Butterworth (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Sean Varela (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), Taylor Shannon (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) will all be looking for minutes on the field from the quarterback position this season.

McKinney will return as Maritime's most experienced running back, but others will be vying for time. Senior Sean Kinney (Calvert, Md./Calvert) returns from an injury in 2015, as well as Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) who picked up 244 yards on the ground last season.

Senior Shawn Todd (Jamaica, N.Y./Jamaica), juniors Devin Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Chris Olberding (Dix Hills, N.Y./Walt Whitman), and sophomore Severino Torelli (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) are all back for their next go-arounds with the Privateers and will look to carry the rock in 2016.

Fischetti will move outside to wide receiver this season after leading the team in receiving yards out of the backfield with 264 last year. Matt Ward (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) was second on the team with 228 receiving yards, while Modica caught 14 passes for over 200 yards in 2015.

Senior Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls), junior Jordan Formicola (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) and sophomore Christian Castle (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) all saw plenty of time on the field last year and will look to be more involved in the Privateer offense. Senior Andrew Short (Covington, La./St. Paul's) is also back off an injury-plagued 2015 campaign and will push for time in the starting lineup.

Junior Mike Yorkey (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), as well as sophomores Sean O'Connor (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) and Cormac Quigley (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) will also add to the experienced core of Privateer wide receivers.

Maritime will add a new dimension to its offensive packages this season with the addition of the tight end position to the team. Senior Brian Leonard (Selden, N.Y./Centereach), junior Jacob Shinnick (Pleasanton, Calif./Granada), sophomore Joseph DeMasi (Islip, N.Y./Islip) will all look to play their way into the starting lineup for the Privateers this season.

With Korwan serving as a captain and vocal leader of Maritime's sturdy offensive line, he is joined by several key returners in 2016. Junior Connor McDaniel (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) appeared in all 10 games a year ago, while sophomore William Le Claire (Middle Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) appeared in seven, and classmate Nicholas Acevedo (Woodside, N.Y./Holy Cross) played in five.

Juniors Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton), Patrick Conlon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph) and Brian Murphy (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) all saw time last year, as did sophomores Kevin Poissant (North Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and Dean Lynch (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside), the group will provide needed breaks on Maritime's up-tempo offensive drives.

Defense
Parker will be the featured member of the Privateer front seven on defense after picking up 92 tackles in his first season with the team. He will look to increase his total from last year and become the first player since 2012 to record over 100 tackles in a campaign.

Parker is joined by junior linebacker Craig Hinrichs (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (45 tackles), senior Eric Wallace (West Point, N.Y./James O'Neill) (27), senior defensive lineman Corey Palladino (Merrick, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (21), and sophomore Payton Campbell (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) (19). The group will be looking to stop the run game and cover the middle of the field defensively.

Adding strength and ability to the Maritime defensive line will be a solid returning group of players looking to push for playing time this year. Amongst the returners this season are senior Sam Feliciano (Orlando, Fla./Colonial), juniors Billy Silke (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), Shane Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y./City Poly), and Wesley Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), and sophomores Jack Johnson (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), Peter Georgiou (Huntington, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood), and Steven Fehr (Patterson, N.Y./Carmel).

In terms of linebackers, senior Dwayne Lacroix (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) is back in the mix after a season away in 2015. Lacroix is joined in the linebacker unit by juniors Paul LaMarca (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity), and Daniel Hink (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), as well as sophomores Michael Martinelli (Pine Bush, N.Y./John S. Burke), Calvin Tanguay (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Jabari Corsfield (Ozone Park, N.Y./Jamaica), John O'Connor (Johns Creek, Ga./Mount Pisgah), and William O'Brien (Salisbury Mills, N.Y./Washingtonville).

The defensive backs unit will be anchored by Price, who finished third on the team with 57 tackles a season ago. Junior Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) also continues to be a force from his safety position with 32 tackles and three pass breakups as a sophomore in 2015. Classmate Garrett Stryzs (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) also saw big minutes and appeared in all 10 games for the Privateers during his junior season.

Senior Ryan Goggin (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor), juniors Ryan McGrath (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Goshen), Anthony Mainella (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), Bruce Kopka (Wilmington, N.C./Ashley), Tim Isidore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), sophomores Matthew Mavrovich (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), John O'Donnell (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), and Karl Riek (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) will join all look to fill the gaps left by the solid group that graduated from the team this past season.

Special Teams
With All-American Kicker Diogo Dietrich '16 graduating, Maritime will be in need of a kicker for the first time in four seasons. As the team's lone returning kicker, look for Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) to add field goal and extra point duties to his resume in addition to his booming kickoffs.

Arny continues to prove his worth for the team as well, with his strong punting ability. Last season, Arny averaged 38.47 yards per punt with seven of those landing inside the opponent's 20-yard line. He will look to finish up his career with another All-Conference selection this season.

Price will remain a threat in the return game with his play-making ability, which earned him an All-Conference nod as both a return specialist and a defensive back. Stryzs and Riek also have experience in both the kickoff and punt return games.
