Scouting the Privateers
Through their 35 games this season, Maritime is hitting .287 on the season with 21 home runs as they have outscored their opponents by a 227-192 differential this year.
Maritime was led by sophomore
Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington), who posted a .405 batting average while starting in all 35 games for the Privateers in his first season with the team. On the year Semler broke the program record for hits in a season (49), doubles (12) and total bases (75).
Senior
Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and junior
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) have kicked their games into a second gear since the start of the Skyline Conference schedule as Woodburn is hitting .420 in 15 conference games with 21 hits, five doubles, two triples, four home runs and a team-best 16 RBIs in those games. McLaughlin is close behind in RBIs with 11 in league contests, as he has picked up a team-best six doubles and scored 13 runs in Skyline games.
Sophomore
Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) has also driven in 13 RBIs in Skyline games while picking up 23 hits, one shy of Semler in Skyline games. On the league schedule Deddo has scored a team-best 19 runs for a season total of 35 to set the modern-day record for runs scored in a season. Senior
Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) has 25 stolen bases on the year which is tied for the single-season record at Maritime as he and Deddo set the table for the middle part of the Privateer lineup. Sophomore
Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) has helped lengthen the Privateer lineup as he is part of the team's three-way tie for RBIs this season, as Schiavoni, Deddo and Semler are all tied for the team lead with 25.
Freshman
Anthony Vieto (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) has driven in 16 runs while scoring 17 of his own, to go along with three home runs and five doubles. Senior outfielder
Justin Baierlein (Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) along with infielders
Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place),
Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann),
Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), and
Jimmy Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) have all picked up key at bats late in the season for the Privateers and will be ready to be called upon during the postseason.
On the hill, sophomore
Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) proved his Skyline First Team All-Conference selection last season was no fluke as he backed up his freshman season with victories over the top three seeds in the tournament not named Maritime. Stuart picked up wins over top-seeded Farmingdale, as well as wins over Old Westbury and St. Joseph's (LI) during league games. On the year he has a 5.51 ERA with a program-record six wins this season.
Freshman
A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) is amongst the league leaders in ERA as he currently holds the team lead by the slimmest of margins over sophomore
Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). Ammirati recorded four wins in a team-high 60 1/3 innings this year, as he allowed just 19 earned runs to go along with a team-high 48 strikeouts and just eight walks.
D'Ancona has been Maritime's most consistent pitcher on the year in both roles as a starter and a reliever. He is just behind Ammirati with a 2.84 ERA and has allowed just 14 earned runs over his 44 1/3 innings on the hill. D'Ancona threw a one-hitter complete game earlier this season against Mount St. Vincent, and also has a pair of saves to go along with his two victories this year.
Freshman
Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) has been a welcomed addition to the staff as well with his team-high three complete games as he is tied for second on the team with four victories. Poliwoda has struck out 28 batters in his 50 1/3 innings this season.
Sophomore
Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic), along with freshman right-hander
Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep), and freshman lefty
Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) could also be options for the Privateers out of the bullpen this postseason.
Scouting the Bears
As a team, the Bears are currently hitting .317 on the season with 22 home runs, as they have outscored their opponents by a 243-206 margin in their 38 games this season.
Leading the charge for the Bears is pitcher/infielder Brian Luebcke, who currently leads the team in hitting with a .387 batting average and also has 19 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs for a total of 46 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
On the mound, Luebcke also led the pitching staff with a 2.71 ERA over his team-leading 63 innings pitched. On the hill, he has accumulated a 6-1 record while striking out 51 batters and walking just 17.
Beyond Luebcke, the Bears have a formidable offense with the likes of infielders Nicholas LoPrinzi (.346 Avg., 4 HR, 31 RBIs), John Condon (.326 Avg., 1 HR, 20 RBIs) and Francis Rapp (.323 Avg., 1 HR, 14 RBIs). While junior outfielder Michael Camerada has been a consistent presence in the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) lineup with his .360 batting average, five home runs and 26 RBIs. In total, eight different Bears reached double-figure RBI totals in 2016.
While Luebcke bolsters the pitching staff, the Bears will also rely on a bevy of upperclassmen with Rosario DiLorenzo (4-5, 51 1/3 IP, 7.19 ERA), Mitch Brigando (3-4, 41 2/3 IP, 6.05 ERA), and Connor Pasetti (3-4, 39 2/3 IP, 4.54 ERA). Junior Anthony Amatuzzi did some heavy lifting out of the bullpen and recorded a 2.53 ERA in his 21 1/3 innings this season.
Head Coach Jerry Sidman, in just his second season as the skipper, will look to make noise in the Skyline Conference postseason during their first year in the league.
