THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the Maritime Men's Lacrosse team defeated the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins by the score of 12-4 on Reinhart Field.
 
The game was the final home game of the season for the Privateers, and prior to the game Maritime recognized the eight members of the 2016 senior class playing in their final games on the field. The senior class featured Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade), Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Kevin Connolly (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity), Morgan Litwin (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), Michael Brunk (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs), and John Hannon (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).
 
As for the game, the Privateers got seven points from sophomore T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who recorded a team-best four goals and three assists on the game. Sophomore Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) was second on the team with three goals and a pair of assists. Junior Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) and sophomore Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) both added two goals apiece, while sophomore Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) netted one goal to cap off the goal scoring for the Privateers.
 
Freshman Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) recorded a pair of assists in the game, while juniors Chris Haun (Necsonset, N.Y./Sachem North), Kieran Kindle (League City, Texas/Clear Falls), along with freshman Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) all added one assist apiece in the game for Maritime. For Kindle, it was the first point in his career coming off a long lead pass down the field in the second quarter.
 
On faceoffs, Hayes was 14-for-18 and recorded a team-best 12 ground balls on the game, while sophomore Owen Hammond (Floral Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) was 2-for-2 on the draws. Strezenec and Petty were both second on the team with four ground balls each, while Danahy, as well as freshman Patrick Fay (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and sophomores Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) both had three ground balls in the contest.
 
Defensively, Hussey led in caused turnovers as he picked up three for the game, while Danahy and freshman Matt Kirby (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each caused a pair of turnovers. Ten other Privateers picked up one caused turnover each including Brunk, Rooney, Izzo, Strezenec, Petty, as well as juniors William McDermott and Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill), sophomore Merrick Kovatch (Frankford, Del./Indian River), and freshmen Jett Schaefer (Islip, N.Y./Islip), and Jack Griffin (Eldersburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph).
 
In goal, McNally played the first 44:30 of the contest and made nine saves as he recorded the victory. Freshman Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) was the second goaltender in the game and played the next 7:11, while recording a pair of saves. Sophomore Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) closed out the game and made five saves in the final 8:19.
 
Maritime struck first in the game as Petty found Izzo for the first goal of the contest just five minutes into the action. Mount St. Vincent evened the game with a goal, but Ragusa broke the draw with his 13th goal of the season to make the game 2-1 in favor of Maritime.
 
After a Dolphin goal tied the game again, Maritime scored with three seconds left in the opening quarter as Danahy picked up his 26th goal of the year off a pass from Ragusa.
 
In the second quarter after a Mount St. Vincent turnover, Kindle picked up the ball and cleared down the field to find Ragusa, who found the back of the net to make the score 4-2 in favor of the home team. Diaz scored off a Ziemski pass for his 20th goal of the season, the most by a Maritime midfielder since Matthew Messina '13 scored 24 goals during the 2013 season.
 
Pellegrino kept his point-streak alive as he netted his 32nd goal of the season on a man-up opportunity as Ragusa recorded the helper. Maritime took its 6-2 lead into the halftime break.
 
Danahy netted a man-up goal to open scoring in the second half as it was once again Ragusa filling the role as the feeder. Ragusa scored the next goal off a Petty pass, followed by a behind-the-back Danahy goal off a lead pass from Haun. Ragusa scored once again off a Danahy feed with 5:56 left in the third quarter to make the score 10-2 in favor of the Privateers.
 
After the third Mount St. Vincent goal, Diaz answered back in the final 30 seconds as he collected his second of the game off a pass from Danahy. Maritime took an 11-3 advantage into the final period of play.
 
Little scoring was done in the final 15 minutes of action, as the Dolphins were the first to score with just 5:39 left in the game. Izzo tallied his fifth goal of the season on a man-up opportunity with 3:28 to go. With the Izzo goal, Maritime had sealed its second conference win of the year heading into the final game of the season on Saturday.
 
Team stats saw Maritime hold a 52-28 shot advantage, while shots on goal were 35-20. Mount St. Vincent turned the ball over 30 times, while Maritime coughed the ball up on 26 occasions. Maritime also had a good clearing game, converting on 22-of-26 chances. Ground balls were in favor of the Privateers at a 54-40 clip, while the Privateers won 16-of-20 faceoffs overall and were 3-for-4 on man-up chances. Mount St. Vincent was 0-for-10 in extra-man opportunities.
 
Maritime (7-6, 2-3 Skyline) will wrap-up the 2016 season this Saturday on the road as the Privateers will travel to Montclair, New Jersey for a matchup with the Montclair State Redhawks with game time slated for 1 p.m.
 
Mount St. Vincent (1-13, 0-5 Skyline) will look for their first league victory on Saturday afternoon, when the Dolphins travel to Long Island for a game against the Farmingdale Rams at 2 p.m.
