MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team dropped its final game of the 2016 season to the Montclair State Redhawks by the score of 18-6 on Sprague Field.
Sophomore
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the Privateers with a pair of goals, while junior
Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck), sophomore
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), and freshmen
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) all tallied solo goals. Freshman
Keith McCoy (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded his first career point with an assist as well.
Senior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) capped off his career winning 12-of-25 faceoff attempts as he led the team with six ground balls. Classmate
Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) was second on the team with four ground balls, while Danahy picked up three.
In goal, sophomore
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) played the first 41:40 in goal and recorded nine saves. Freshman
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) came on in relief and made two saves in his 9:46 worth of time in goal. Sophomore
Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played 8:34 in goal as well and stopped one shot.
Montclair State got on the board first with a goal just 3:42 into the contest. Maritime evened the score with Ragusa collecting his 17th goal of the year at the 11:45 mark of the first half. The Redhawks scored the final nine goals of the period and took a 10-1 advantage into the second quarter.
The Redhawks scored then scored the first two goals of the second quarter and the first of the third period to open a 13-1 advantage.
Danahy ended the streak with his 29th goal of the year. After another two Montclair State goals, Danahy picked up his second of the game to trim the lead to 15-3 with 4:54 left in the third quarter.
Montclair State scored twice more, followed by Izzo netting his sixth of the year to close out the third quarter with the score at 17-4.
Maritime scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter as McCoy found Petty with 13:43 left on the clock. Ziemski then tallied an unassisted goal with 7:32 left to cap off the scoring for the Privateers. Montclair State scored once more to record the 18-6 victory.
Team stats saw Montclair State hold a 41-28 shot advantage, while Maritime turned the ball over 21 times while the Redhawks gave it away 12 times. The Privateers were 17-of-21 on clear chances, while Montclair State was 17-of-19.
Maritime finishes its season with an overall record of 7-7 with a 2-4 mark in Skyline Contests.
Montclair State (10-6, 6-0 Skyline) will once again serve as the top seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament and take on fourth-seeded Kean on Wednesday evening as the Skyline Conference Semifinals will be underway at 6 p.m. on Sprague Field.
