Women’s Swimming Splits vs. Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph’s (LI); Men’s Swimming Defeats Gryphons

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On another busy night inside the Riesenberg Aquatic Center, the Maritime men's and women's swimming teams were back in action with Skyline Conference competition. The women's team took on St. Joseph's (LI) and Sarah Lawrence and went 1-1 overall, with a victory over the Golden Eagles by a 110-89 score, but fell to the Gryphons by a 112-91 final. The men's team knocked off Sarah Lawrence by a 112-70 score.
 
The men's team won nine of 11 events on the night in their head-to-head battle with the Gryphons. In the three-way meet for the women, Maritime scored a pair of individual victories with both coming from freshman Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot).
 
In the 200 freestyle relay, the men's team capped off the win with a time of 1:32.81, as Truong, Russell, Marino and Wu led the Privateers to the win. Murray, Kelleher, Conway and Dratch took second, while DeYoung, Pierce, Horne and junior Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) took third.
 
Green led the women's team on the night with victories in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. In the 50 free, she led swimmers from all three teams with a time of 26.11 before picking up a 56.89 in the 100 free.
 
In addition to her two individual victories, Green helped her 200 yard medley relay team open up the night with a second place finish behind Sarah Lawrence's relay team. Green along with junior Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled) and sophomores Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) picked up a time of 2:05.95. The second relay team for the Privateers featured junior Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) with sophomore Taylor O'Brien (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and freshmen Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent) picked up a time of 2:15.98.
 
In the 1,000 freestyle, Aaron led Maritime and was the third overall swimmer to the wall with a 12:44.95. Senior Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) was fifth overall with a 14.06.64 in the distance event. In the 200 freestyle, Stanton was second with a 2:17.33, while sophomore Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was sixth overall with a 2:29.20.
 
Green's first victory came in the 50 freestyle, as she beat out her closest competitor from Sarah Lawrence by 0.12 seconds. Senior Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) picked up a 28.47, while junior Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) had a 35.19. During the 200 individual medley, Zink led the Privateers with a 2:39.39, while Soulagnet was just a few seconds off the pace with a 2:45.96.
 
Davis recorded Maritime's top time in the 100 butterfly with a 1:19.08, while Thompson took fifth overall with a 1:1.66. Green's second win of the night game in the 100 freestyle as she scored a two-second win over one swimmer from St. Joseph's (LI) as the pair were the only two to record sub-minute times. Leady was fourth with a 1:04.39, while Champlin had a 1:08.85.
 
Junior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) competed in the 100 backstroke and finished with a time of 1:16.85, T. O'Brien was seventh with a 1:27.98, while junior Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) score an eighth place finish in the event. During the 500 freestyle, it was once again Aaron to lead the Privateers as she was narrowly beaten by two seconds with her time of 5:51.39, A. O'Brien finished fifth in the event. In the 100 breaststroke, Stanton led Maritime with a 1:21.59, with Zink close behind with a 1:21.59.
 
Finally in the 200 freestyle relay, A. O'Brien, Leahy, Thompson and Soulagnet finished just 1.74 seconds off the lead with a time of 1:52.90 as the top relay team to finish for the Privateers.

Sophomores Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) and junior Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) paced the field in the 200 medley relay to open the night with a 1:45.18. In the men's 1,000 freestyle it was senior Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) to lead the way with a time of 11:45.39, while sophomore Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) was close behind in second place with an 11:47.16.
 
Truong scored an individual win in the 200 freestyle with a 1:54.72, while classmate Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip) came in second with a 2:02.59, and fellow sophomore Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) taking third with a 2:04.98. Junior James Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was Maritime's top finisher in the 50 freestyle with a second place finish at 24.31, senior Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) was third with a 24.44.
 
The Privateers swept the podium in the 200 individual medley with freshmen Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), and Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach), as well as senior Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) taking the top three spots. Lewis scored a second place finish in the 100 butterfly at 59.85, with freshman Matthew Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) in third and sophomore Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) taking fourth place. The Privateers followed that up with another sweep of the top three spots in the 100 freestyle with Russell, freshman Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and senior Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) all finishing with times less than 56 seconds.
 
Rookie Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.42. Sophomore Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) took second and senior Charles Gallagher (Port Ewen, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) took third as the Privateers swept yet another top three spots during the event. Freshman Francis Horne (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) paced the field in the 500 freestyle with a 5:57.23, before Hart took the top spot in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:12.66, edging out sophomore Logan Riales (Bonham, Texas/Maury (Va.)), who had a 1:12.96.
 
The Maritime men's team now stands at 5-0 overall with a 3-0 record in Skyline Conference meets; while the women's team is 4-2 overall with a 3-1 mark in conference meets. The teams will have a quick turnaround to tomorrow, when the Privateers travel to take on the Merchant Marine Mariners at the Merchant Marine Invitational in O'Hara Pool in Kings Point, N.Y.
 
While the meet is a non-scoring invitational overall, the scores between the Privateers and the Mariners will count for the purpose of Skyline Conference standings.
