Coneys Leads Men to Second Place Finish, Women Finish 9th in Season Opener

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's and Women's Cross Country teams got their 2015 season underway on Sunday morning at Clove Lakes Park on Staten Island.
 
The Maritime men finished in second place with 50 points as senior Cameron Coneys (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) crossed the finish line in second place to start off his last campaign with the team. The women's team finished the day with a ninth place finish, as several newcomers had impressive starts to their respective careers.
 
Coneys finished the men's race with a time of 17:33.2, freshman Christian Berglin (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) brought home a seventh place finish (18:41.0), classmate Vincent Cotrone (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) also clocked in with an 11th place finish (19:50.9).
 
Sophomore Timmy Montera (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) got his second year off with a 13th place finish (19:19.8), while the final Privateer to score was sophomore Kyle Smyth (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (22:49.4). Rounding out the field for the Privateers was freshman Tanner Russo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who came in 44th position with a time of 22:23.0.
 
The women's team came in ninth of the 13-team field, with 244 points overall on the day. Leading the way for Maritime was freshman Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), who came across the line with a time of 24:49.1, while freshman Ekaterina Aaron () also helped anchor the front end of the field with a 25:53.8.
 
Rookie Jean Colgan (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) scored third for the Privateers with a time of 28:21.7, while classmate Isabella Kent (30:37.6), and Riley Huang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) (32:24.0) also scored for the team. Junior Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) was the sixth Privateer to cross the finish line as she came across the line at 37:24.9.
 
After the team's first race today, Maritime will next prepare for the strong field that will be featured at the Bard Raptors Invitational, which takes place next Saturday morning on the Bard College Campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
