Skyline Conference Championship ResultsMILTON, N.Y. – The Maritime Cross Country team clinched the 2015 Skyline Conference Cross Country Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome.
The team championship is the first since the 2007 season, when Maritime edged out Bard by just 14 points. Since the 2007 title, Maritime had four runner-up finishes at the 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 championship meets.
Junior
Joseph Pellegrino (Huntington, N.Y./Commack) competing in his first season with the team, and just his third career collegiate race earned Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year Accolades, finishing second overall at the meet behind a freshman from St. Joseph's (LI), who picked up Most Outstanding Runner at the competition.
Earning Coach of the Year Accolades was Maritime's
Colin Culhane in just his second season at the helm of the program.
The men's team scored a combined 42 points on the afternoon, 22 clear of second place St. Joseph's (LI). Yeshiva came across in third place with 102 points, followed by Mount St. Mary (136), Purchase (140*), Farmingdale (140*), Sage (161), Sarah Lawrence (175), Mount St. Vincent (233), Old Westbury (290), and St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (297). Helping the team to the victory was Pellegrino with his second place finish and a time of 28:59.2. He was followed by sophomore
Nick Sherman (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), who came across the line at 29:05.2. Both Pellegrino and Sherman were named to the Skyline All-Conference First Team.
Earning Skyline All-Conference Second Team accolades was senior
Cameron Coneys (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields), who came in eighth place finish with a time of 29:29.3. Freshman
Tom Mongeau (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) was also named to the league's second team after coming in 11th position with a time of 30:21.8. Rounding out the scoring positions for the Privateers was freshman
Christian Berglin (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays), with a time of 31:15.8 in 17th position.
Also finishing for the Privateers at the championship meet were junior
Kevin Sun (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), as he clocked in at 31:37.5, followed by freshman
Garrett Ernst (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) (31:44.3), and rookie
Vincent Cotrone (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) (31:48.4) as the trio all scored within the top 22 racers.
Sophomore
Timmy Montera (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) was across the line next with a time of 32:21.7, along with rookie
Kurt Schieferstein (Lattingtown, N.Y./Chaminade) (35:33.9). Fellow rookies
Tanner Russo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (35:56.9) and
Matt Papania (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) (35:48.9), along with sophomore
Nick Musto (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) (41:27.7) all finished the eight kilometer course in strong fashion.
The women's team earned a ninth place finish at the meet. Freshman
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) led the way for the Privateers with a time of 23:36.8 to pace the Privateer women along the five kilometer course.
Freshman
Jean Colgan (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) finished in the second spot for the Privateers at 27:15.4, followed by sophomore
Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Brush), who scored a time of 28:31.2. Rookie
Riley Huang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) coming across in fourth, as she recorded a time of 30:22.4. Sophomore
Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) wrapped up the scoring with a time of 35:01.3. Junior
Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) came across with a time of 36:49.7 to close out the Privateers' six racers at the event.
Maritime scored a team total of 242 points for ninth position. Earning the crown of women's champion was St. Joseph's (LI) with a perfect 15 points. Sarah Lawrence came in second with 78 points, followed by Sage with 104. Yeshiva (123), Mount St. Mary (150), Farmingdale (158), Purchase (169), and Old Westbury (242) rounded out the top eight. Mount St. Vincent did not record a team score.
Maritime's Cross Country squads will close out the season in two weekends at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals at Letchworth State Park in Castile, N.Y.
