Box Score

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Despite 20 saves from junior goalkeeper Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East), the Maritime Women's Soccer team dropped its 2014 home opener on Sunday afternoon to the SUNY-ESF Mighty Oaks by the score of 9-0 on Reinhart Field.

For Hoar, the 20 saves just fell one shy of her career-high set last season, while the total also places her 5th on the single-game record list for saves in one contest. The current record for saves in a match is 25 set by current teammate Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) in 2012.

The Mighty Oaks came out quickly with a shot within the first 20 seconds that was blocked before making its way on goal. Hoar stopped the next shot in her direction for her first save of the contest with 1:48 gone by in the opening period.

At 7:26 of the opening half, SUNY-ESF connected on the opening and eventual game-winning goal of the match. The Mighty Oaks added five more goals in the period to take a 6-0 lead into the halftime break. Shots at that point were 18-1, with the lone Privateer shot coming off the foot of sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola).

Maritime went on to take two more shots in the second half, both off the foot of Athan but the Privateers were unable to get on the scoreboard against the stingy Mighty Oak defense.

SUNY-ESF went on to add three more goals in the final 45 minutes of play en route to the 9-0 road victory.

Earning the win was Kiki Hilmer, who did not register a save in the first half of play. She was relieved by Megan Herbst, who also did not make a save while playing the final 45 minutes. Hoar suffered the loss despite her solid effort.

Maritime (0-4, 0-0 Skyline) will look to regroup on Wednesday evening when the Privateers travel to take on the York (NY) Cardinals at 6 p.m. in Brooklyn, N.Y. SUNY-ESF (3-0) will head back to Syracuse for its home opener against Delhi on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
