Throggs Neck, N.Y. (April 10, 2014) – The Maritime baseball team played another pivotal Skyline matchup on Wednesday night in the Bronx, as the team defeated the Maccabees of Yeshiva by a final score of 11-1. This victory brings the privateers current winning streak to four and league record to 7-3 on the season.

The Privateers went with a committee approach on the mound as senior right-hander Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) got the start and threw two innings of work. The Maccabees struck first as Niemeyer gave up an unearned run on a Privateer fielding error. However, the next time Niemeyer toed the rubber in the second inning, he had a seven-run cushion.

Sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) began the rally in the top of the second when he got drilled at the plate with the bases loaded to score in the first run of the contest. Junior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) kept it going with a two-run single down the left field line to drive in juniors Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach).

After an RBI base on balls by senior Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), both junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) grabbed RBI's on sacrifice flies. Doerbecker added a two more RBI's before the inning came to an end, driving in Sollin and Bauer with a single through the left side to give the Privateers an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, Niemeyer gave up no hits, one walk, struck out one batter and picked off a base runner at second base.

Following a leadoff triple in the top of the third by freshman Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade), Bauer knocked in the only run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Sophomore David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) relieved Niemeyer in the third and pitched a perfect inning of work, with one strikeout.

After the Privateers went down in order in the fourth, freshman Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) entered the game in the bottom of the fourth in place of Ramos. He allowed no runs on one hit and added a pair of strikeouts.

A pair of walks in the top half of the fifth by Sollin and Stewart got the inning started, followed by McLaughlin hitting a double to centerfield that plated both runners, giving him a trio of RBI's on the contest and putting the Privateer lead at 11-1.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Marks walked two batters, but allowed nothing more in the inning as he induced a groundout to end the frame while stranding two runners. Freshman Peter McGurty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) came on to pitch in the following frame and allowed no runs one hit.

McLaughlin entered the game to make his collegiate pitching, and retired three straight batters after walking the first batter he faced.

On the rubber, Marks was credited with the win after throwing two innings, allowing no run on just one hit and striking out a pair of Maccabees. Niemeyer started off the game and pitched a total of two innings, allowing no earned runs, no hits, and striking out three batters. Ramos, McGurty, and McLaughlin all pitched one inning of work apiece, and gave up no runs.

Taking the loss for Yeshiva was Benjy Blumenthal who threw six innings and allowed 11 total runs, seven of which were earned runs, on eight walks and six hits. Moshe Zisblatt came on in relief in the seventh and threw one inning of work for the Maccabees, allowing no runs on one hit.

The Privateers (10-13, 7-3 Skyline) will look to build on this four game winning streak when they host Purchase on Saturday in a Skyline doubleheader at 11 a.m.

Yeshiva (0-19, 0-14 Skyline) looks to turn it around with a non-conference doubleheader on Friday April 11 against Albertus Magnus College at 10 a.m.
