Baseball Preview: Privateers Host Old Westbury in Regular Season Finale

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 26, 2014) – After the comeback attempt fell short in their last matchup on Wednesday, the Privateer baseball team spring back into action this Saturday for their regular season finale.  Maritime takes on Old Westbury in a Skyline matchup doubleheader to close out the season this Saturday on Reinhart Field at 11 a.m. (currently in a rain delay, with projected start time now at 12 p.m.)

SENIOR DAY CEREMONY
Before the start of the second game on Saturday, the Privateers will be honoring its senior class, who will be playing their final home regular season games on Saturday. The seniors to be honored are Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore), Jerry Frasier (Jackson, N.J./M.A.T.E.S.), Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior), and Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's).

Bauer has been the team's starting shortstop for the past three seasons. During his tenure he has posted a .288 batting average with 89 hits, 76 runs scored, 41 RBI's, and two homeruns. He has added 29 stolen bases. He currently ranks in the top ten in several offensive categories including hits, batting average, and stolen bases. He ranks second all-time in runs scored behind Galli.

A four-year member of the team, first baseman Jerry Frasier (Jackson, N.J./M.A.T.E.S.) has tallied up a .238 career batting average with two runs, two RBI's, and one stolen base.

A four-year starter for the Privateers, Galli has posted a .290 career batting average with 122 hits, 79 runs scored, 62 RBI's, and a trio of homeruns. In 127 career starts, Galli has also added 33 swipes on the base paths. He is the career leader in several categories for the Privateers including hits, runs scored, and RBI's.

Cannella has been a four-year member of the Privateers pitching staff. During his time, he has a record of 10-9 with an earned run average of 5.06. Over his 137 innings tossed, Cannella has added seven complete games and 81 strikeouts. He ranks in the top ten all-time in strikeouts, wins, innings pitched, and complete games. Cannella added an impressive no-hitter at home in a Skyline matchup with St. Joseph's earlier this season.

Niemeyer has tossed 165 innings in his career at Maritime, posting a 9-14 record, a 5.07 earned run average while adding 3 complete games and 141 strikeouts. He ranks in the top ten for several pitching categories including wins, innings pitched, and earned run average. This past Wednesday, Niemeyer stuck out a batter at home against CCNY to make him the all-time strikeout leader for the Privateers.

In four years for the Privateers, Sarna has been a key player in the starting staff. Throughout his time at Maritime, Sarna has posted a 9-7 record while posting a 4.38 earned run average, the lowest in Maritime history. He has struck out 97 batters in his career spanned over 135.2 innings and adding four complete games. He ranks in the top ten all time in strikeouts, complete games, wins, and earned run average. Also, on March 11th of this year, Sarna pitched a perfect game on the road against Skyline rival Yeshiva.

LAST GAME RECAP
The Privateers are coming off a 6-5 loss against the visiting Beavers of CCNY on Wednesday.

Sophomore David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) got the start for the Privateers, and walked three batters and gave up three runs, only one of which was earned.

At the plate, Galli went 2-for-4 at the dish with a trio of RBIs on a bases-clearing triple in bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, those were the last runs the Privateers.

Freshman Peter McGurty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) was another bright sport for the Privateers, hurling five innings in relief while allowing just two hits and no runs, while adding four strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
The Panthers of Old Westbury come into this pivotal Skyline finale with an overall record of 16-19, and a conference record of 10-4. They are riding a two-game winning streak against non-conference opponents Lehman and Baruch.

The Panthers are led by Jacob Coners at the dish who is hitting .354 with 25 runs scored, and team-highs in both hits with 45 and RBI's with 23.

Nick Yip supplies the power with five long balls on the season, four triples, and 63 total bases, all team-highs for the Panthers. Yip is hitting .315 on the season.

The Panthers have a two-headed monster on the mound with starters Arismendy Nunez and Tim Ingram. Nunez has posted a 4-2 record with three complete games, a 2.30 earned run average, and 47 strikeouts. Ingram has posted a 5-2 record, three complete games, a 2.74 earned run average, and 56 strikeouts.

ALL-TIME SERIES
In a series that dates back 11 years, the Privateers are 3-19 all-time against Old Westbury, and are currently on a two game skid. In their last meeting back on May 4, 2013, the Privateers were defeated by Old Westbury by a score of 21-2 in the Skyline tournament.

In that contest, outfielder Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. The only other RBI of the contest was added by shortstop Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) on a groundout.

James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) was the highlight of the pitching staff during that contest as he was the only Privateer hurler to not allow a run. He threw two innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out two.

UP NEXT
This marks the final game of the regular season for the Privateers. Having clinched a spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament already, they will play again in the Skyline Conference Tournament, however opponent, place, date, and time are still to be determined.
