THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 22, 2014) – Coming off of a 4-3 drama-filled victory over Baruch, the Maritime baseball team looks to keep the momentum rolling with a win this Wednesday in a non-conference matchup against the visiting City College of New York. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
LAST GAME RECAPOn Wednesday, the Privateers were able to pull out a one-run victory against the Bearcats of Baruch.
In that contest, senior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-4 at the dish, scoring a run and driving in an RBI that tied the game for the Privateers in the top half of the sixth frame. Later that inning, freshman
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) broke things open with a two-run home run to give the Privateers a 3-1 advantage.
Junior right-hander
James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) toed the rubber and was able to hurl a complete game, allowing three earned runs on four walks and 11 hits. He added four strikeouts in his first career start.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERSCity College of New York enters the contest against Maritime with a record of 8-11-1, including a 2-6 mark in the CUNYAC. The Beavers last took on conference opponent Staten Island in a Monday night doubleheader where they were swept by the hometown Dolphins.
The Beavers are led by senior infielder Gabriel Pena who holds the team lead in batting average at .398. He also leads the team with 24 hits, five doubles, and two homeruns.
On the rubber, sophomore Jose Aquino leads the way for the Beaver pitching staff, through eight appearances the team ace has posted a 5-2 record with a 2.25 earned run average and a team-high 31 strikeouts.
ALL-TIME SERIESThe Privateers are deadlocked and are 7-7 in their recorded matchups with City College of New York for the all-time series, which dates back to the 1985 season. In the last matchup on March 17, 2013 the Beavers were able to grab a victory in the back half of a doubleheader.
Then-Sophomore
Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) went 2-3 at the dish with the teams only extra base hit in the form of a first inning double.
HEAD-TO-HEAD UP NEXTAfter Wednesday's contest the Privateers close out the regular season on Saturday against Skyline foe Old Westbury in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field.
City College hits the road for an pivotal CUNYAC doubleheader against John Jay on Saturday at noon.
