Baseball Preview: Maritime Takes on Skyline Rival NYU-Poly in Wednesday Doubleheader

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) - After getting rained out on Sunday afternoon, the Maritime Privateer baseball team will host the Jays of NYU-Poly for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31st on Reinhart Field. The first game of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch.

LAST GAME RECAP
On Saturday, right fielder Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 4-for-5 in the pair of games on Saturday afternoon, including his first home run of the season, while adding two walks and three RBI's against visiting St. Joseph's (Brooklyn). Junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) also homered as he was a combined 3-for-8 in the doubleheader, he added three runs scored and two RBI's. In addition, Sollin started the rally in the fifth inning with an RBI single that kick started the Privateers to tie the score at 5-5 in game two. However, the Bears went on to add a pair of runs in the sixth to put their tally at seven, a score good enough to earn the doubleheader sweep.

SCOUTING THE JAYS
The Jays head into a doubleheader against conference rival Maritime with an overall record of 0-6 to this point in the season. Tomorrow's matchup also marks the first Skyline contests for the visiting NYU-Poly. The team last played in Fort Myers, Fla. during the week of March 15-21, where they dropped all six contests to this point in the season.
In addition to being a starter in the rotation for the Jays, junior Kian Downes leads the team in several offensive categories on the young season including batting average of .294, and also leads the squad in runs with four. He also has the only three extra base hits on the season for the team. Freshman Peter Finch leads the team with three RBI's, with a total of four hits to give him a batting average of .250.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The Privateers are 15-6 all-time against the Jays and are riding a three-game winning streak including a pair of victories in 2013. In the first outing last season, right hander Kurt Niemeyer got the victory while tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, and adding 13 strikeouts in a game that was later decided in extra innings.

Albert Doerbecker made the difference as he knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning with an RBI single.

In the latest contest on April 26 of last year the Privateers defeated the Jays in a landslide by a final of 22-4. Then-junior Nick Galli went 2-for-5 at the dish with a triple and a three run bomb putting his RBI total at six for the contest. Third baseman D.J. Seymour had an impressive 4-for-5 afternoon with four RBI's and five runs scored.

The Privateers continue the home stand on Saturday, when they take on St. Joseph's in a Skyline doubleheader on Reinhart Field scheduled for 11 a.m.
Following the doubleheader against Maritime, the Jays of NYU-Poly begin a stretch of four road games beginning with a conference doubleheader against Skyline opponent Purchase on Friday, April 4 at 6 p.m.
