Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 16, 2014) – The Maritime baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Baruch, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Reinhart Field in what was a "road" game for the Privateers. The victory moves the Privateers to 13-15 overall on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 9-15.
Junior
James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) made his first career start and pitched all nine innings for the complete game victory. He struck out four batters.
At the plate, the Privateers' bats were silent until the sixth inning, when senior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) drove in classmate
Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) with a double. Freshman
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) followed that with a two-run homer to give Maritime a 3-1 lead. Baruch added another run in the bottom of the sixth.
Maritime tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth and that proved to be a big one, as the Bearcats threatened in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double by senior Phillip Loprete, who wound up scoring one batter later. Very held his composure late into the game and with the final pitches of his 140+ total pitch count, he induced two fly-outs to center to end the game.
The Privateers have a week off and will return to the field on Wednesday, April 23, with another non-conference game against the CUNYAC's City College of New York. Opening pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
