NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 13, 2014) – The Maritime baseball team swept a pair of one-run games from the Mount St. Mary Knights on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 9-8 in 10 innings in the opener, before picking up an 11-10 victory in the second game.

The Privateers took the opener by a score of 9-8 in 10 innings as freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) collected the go-ahead double with one out to score junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) all the way from first.

In game two, the Privateers opened up an 11-2 advantage after just 1 1/2 innings behind big hits from McLaughlin, junior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade). The pitching staff was able to hold off a late surge by the Knights in the 11-10 win.

McLaughlin finished the afternoon with six RBIs while going 4-for-9 at the dish. Longo and Stewart collected three hits and four RBIs each on the afternoon, while Sollin, senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), and junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) all ended the day with a pair of RBIs each.

The first game saw plenty of offense and quite a few pitchers as 10 hurlers took the hill during the opener, including three for the Privateers. Senior Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) took to the mound for Maritime and yielded three runs through the first two innings of work.

In the top of the third inning, sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) led off with a single, followed by Stewart drawing a walk. Senior Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) moved the pair into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Sollin was credited with a sacrifice fly to score the first Privateer run, followed by an error after Galli put the ball in play to pull Maritime within one at 3-2.

Mount St. Mary added three more runs to take a 6-2 advantage, but again Maritime answered back in the top half of the next inning. Stewart drove in the third Privateer run to score Doerbecker, who led off the inning by being hit by a 3-1 pitch. Sollin collected an RBI with another sacrifice fly, followed by Galli driving in Stewart with a double to left centerfield.

Niemeyer settled down and kept the Knights off the scoreboard through the next five innings of work to give his offense a chance to come back in the game. In the top of the sixth, the Privateers did just that as McLaughlin plated Bauer with a single into left field to tie the game at six apiece.

In the top of the ninth inning, Maritime took its first lead of the contest as Galli singled to start things and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Longo plated Galli with a single up the middle, and then promptly stole second. Doerbecker followed by singling, then sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) walked to load the bases. A 1-0 pitch to Tyler hit the right-handed batter allowing Longo to score, giving Maritime a two-run lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.

After Niemeyer walked the first batter in the inning, the senior was pulled in favor of junior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) who then walked two of the next three batters to load the bases. On a 1-1 pitch to the third hitter in the Knight lineup, Vinnie Carminati doubled down the right field line to score two runners and tie the game at eight apiece. Alsdorf then got the next two batters to send the game to extras.

In the tenth, Sollin led off with a walk to put the go-ahead run on base. Two batters later, McLaughlin was up and stroked a 2-2 pitch into left field to score Sollin all the way from first and put the Privateers back on top. Junior Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) came on in search of his first save of the season and retired the side in order in the bottom of the tenth to secure the win.

Niemeyer did not factor into the decision as he threw a season-high eight innings and allowed seven runs on as many hits with five walks on the game. Alsdorf picked up his third win of the season (3-3) after yielding one run on one hit and three walks in the ninth inning. Pfundstein collected the save after tossing seven pitches in his perfect inning of work.

In game two, Bauer, Sollin and Galli got on base to start off the game with bases loaded and nobody out to bring up McLaughlin. The rookie laced a double to right centerfield to plate the three runners and give Maritime the early 3-0 lead. The next batter was Longo, who added to the run total as he drove in McLaughlin with a base knock to left field.

The bottom half of the inning saw Mount St. Mary trim the lead in half as a pair of errors by the Privateer in the field extended the inning for the Knights to score a pair.

The top of the second inning was Maritime's third best offensive output in one single inning this season as the team scored seven runs in the frame. Bauer and Sollin reached on one out walks, then Galli lined out for the second out of the inning. Up next was McLaughlin once again and he collected another RBI as he picked up Bauer with a single to right field. A wild pitch moved Sollin and McLaughlin into scoring position to bring up Longo.

The junior 2nd baseman stroked a doubled down the left field line to plate the pair and give the Privateers a 7-2 advantage. Doerbecker continued the train as he singled to plate Longo. Woodburn was then hit by a pitch and Tyler walked to load the bases. Stewart was next at bat and tripled to right centerfield to drive home all three Privateer base runners and give the team a nine-run cushion.

On the hill for Maritime was senior Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore), coming off his no-hitter eight days earlier against St. Joseph's. After allowing two runs in the first inning to the Knights, he set the side down in order in the bottom of the second inning.

With some suspect defense by the Privateers in the middle innings, Cannella yielded two runs in both the third and fourth innings as the Knights began to chip away at Maritime's lead.

Cannella was unable to get out of the fifth inning, and gave way to Pfundstein, who stepped to the hill for the second time on the day and walked the first batter he faced on a 3-2 pitch. Pfundstein did allow two inherited runners to score on sacrifice flys, and induced a popup to end the 5th inning. The Knights scored four runs on three hits and an error in the frame to pull within run.

The Maritime offense went stagnant through the remainder of the contest as the team was only able to get two batters past first base through the rest of the game. However, Pfundstein continued to toss the ball well and held the Mount St. Mary offense in check despite allowing three hits over the final two innings as he ended up getting the three-inning save.

Cannella picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the year as he allowed four earned runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings. Pfundstein collected his second save on the afternoon after tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits and a walk.

Maritime (12-15, 9-5 Skyline) will play its final scheduled road game of the regular season on April 16 at 3:30 p.m. when the Privateers travel to take on Baruch in non-conference action at Bronx Community College.

Despite being tied for the highest win total amongst the Skyline Conference teams with Old Westbury (9), the Privateers have still not clinched a berth in the league tournament despite having only two league games remaining. The majority of the teams will make up several games throughout the next two weeks, to provide a better playoff picture by the time Maritime plays Old Westbury on April 26.

Mount St. Mary (11-11, 5-3 Skyline) will travel to Staten Island on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to take on the College of Staten Island Dolphins at Morales Field.
