Box Score 2 THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 12, 2014) – The Maritime baseball team dropped both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader to the Purchase Panthers by the score of 14-2 in seven innings in the opener, before dropping the second game by a 5-1 score.
In the first game junior
Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) was sent to the mound and yielded six runs though the first two innings. In the bottom of the second inning, the Privateers pulled within five as
Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led off the inning with a single. Three batters later with the bases loaded, junior
Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) drove Longo in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
A pair of two-run home runs by Purchase in the top of the fourth inning put the game well out of reach as the Panthers opened up a 10-1 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore
Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) walked with one out followed by a single by Kirk, and senior
Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Up next was junior
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), who grounded out and allowed Tyler to score to make the score 10-2.
Alsdorf was pulled to start the fifth inning, and sophomore
David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) came on to hang up zeros in the fifth and sixth innings. Ramos and freshman
Peter McGurty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) came on to finish off the top of the seventh, as the Panthers scored four runs on four hits in the frame to cap off the scoring at 14 runs.
Final pitching decisions saw
Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) picking up the loss after allowing four earned runs on nine hits and four walks over four innings of work. Ramos allowed four runs on five hits and three walks over 2-plus innings of work. McGurty registered an inning of work while allowing one hit.
In game two, senior
Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) matched up in a dual with Christian Knochen as the pair exchanged scoreless innings through the top of the fourth innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Sollin connected on a solo home run over the right centerfield fence to put the Privateers ahead 1-0.
Purchase tied the game with a base hit through the right side of the infield in the top of the sixth. The Panthers continued on the offensive attack in the top of the seventh as six of the first seven batters reached in the inning and plated four runs before junior
James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came on and walked a batter to plate a run and was able to get a ground ball double play ended the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Maritime attempted to put together a rally as junior
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) singled to centerfield and moved up on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) walked as a pinch hitter as did Bauer to load the bases with two outs. However, the Privateers were unable to score as the team fell by a 5-1 margin.
Sarna dropped his first decision of the season to fall to 3-1 on the year, after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Very finished the game as he went 2/3 of an inning after getting the ground ball double play.
Maritime (9-15, 6-5 Skyline) will have a quick turnaround to tomorrow afternoon when the Privateers travel to Newburgh, New York for a conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Purchase (9-8, 5-3 Skyline) will take on Mount St. Vincent at home on Sunday at 12 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
