THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 11, 2014) – The Privateer Baseball team enters this weekend's contests riding a four game winning streak, all against Skyline opponents. They look to build on that with a pair of games at home against Purchase on Reinhart Field at 11 a.m.
Next the Privateers hit the road to Newburgh N.Y. to take on Mount St. Mary in a key doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
CANNELLA RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY BY NCBWASenior
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) earned yet another weekly honor after his no-hitter this past Saturday against St. Joseph's - and this one is a national accolade! On Thursday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Cannella the Division III National Pitcher of the Week. This is the second time a Privateer has received this accolade this season as
Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned the honor after his perfect game in early March. So Cannella has complete the tri-fecta of weekly honors - earning Skyline Pitcher of the Week, ECAC Division III Metro Division Pitcher of the Week and now this NCBWA honor.
LAST GAME RECAPThe Privateers last played on Wednesday against Skyline rival Yeshiva where they were able to grab a victory by a score of 11-1. In that contest, freshman
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) went 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of doubles and a three RBI's. Junior
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) went 1-for-2 at the plate, adding a run, a stolen base, and a pair of RBI's.
On the mound, no Privateer allowed an earned run, as senior
Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) started the game and threw two innings of work, giving up one unearned run on no hits, two walks, and a three of strikeouts. Freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) was credited with the win as he gave up no runs on one hit, two walks, and two strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERSThe Purchase Panthers enter the doubleheader against Maritime with an overall record of 7-8, and a conference record of 3-3. They are coming off of a split in a doubleheader vs St. Joseph's.
On the season, senior John Jonas is hitting .324 at the dish with 11 hits, one home run and a team-high 13 RBI's.
Junior pitcher Chris Nast anchors the staff for the Panthers, posting a 2.78 earned run average and a record of 3-1 on the season.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTSMount St. Mary enters the weekend with an overall record of 10-8 and a conference record of 4-0. They come into the matchup having dropped their last contest against non-conference opponent Manhattanville by a score of 11-8.
Senior outfielder Vinnie Carminati sets the tone for the Knights as he leads the team in several offensive categories including batting average with .455, hits with 25, RBI's with 17, and on-base percentage with .565.
Sophomore pitcher Brandon Lubrano leads the staff for the Knights with a record 3-0 on the season and an impressive earned run average of 0.72. He has allowed just two earned runs in 25 innings and leads the team with two complete games, one shutout, and 18 strikeouts.
ALL-TIME SERIESThe Privateers are 5-8 all-time against the Purchase Panthers including a victory in their last outing in a Skyline Conference Tournament consolation matchup by a score of 14-8. In that contest, then-junior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 1-3 at the plate, adding two runs, two walks, an RBI, and three stolen bases. Earning the win was
Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) who threw five innings of work in relief, allowing one earned run and adding one strikeout.
Against the Mount St. Mary Knights, the Privateers are 3-18 all-time including a victory in their most recent victory last season in the second game of a doubleheader. Maritime took the win by a score of 11-8. In the contest
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Privateers an 8-1 lead. Niemeyer earned the win on the mound throwing seven innings and allowing six earned runs while striking out four.
HEAD-TO-HEADUP NEXTAfter this weekend's quartet of games, the Privateers hit the road for a non-conference matchup against Baruch on Wednesday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bronx at Bronx Community College.
After the Saturday doubleheader, the Panthers will host Mount St. Vincent on Sunday in a conference doubleheader at 12 p.m. The Knights will travel to Staten Island to take on the Dolphins in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 15 at 5 p.m.
