THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 7, 2014) – After nearly two full weeks off, the Maritime baseball team returns to the diamond at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y. on Sunday and Monday in search of its first win of the 2014 campaign.
On Sunday, the Privateers host Southern Vermont for a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m. Followed by a doubleheader against the Plymouth State Panthers on Monday evening with first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
LAST GAME RECAP
Maritime returns to New York after kicking off the 2014 season in Central Florida with a quartet of loses to four different opponents from February 20-23.
In the team's season opener against Brandeis, the Privateers fell by a 5-0 score. The Privateers followed that up with losses to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), Grace (Neb.), and Capital (Ohio).
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
After having several cancellations to start the season, the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont enter with an 0-1 record. The team fell by a 12-4 score to Southern Virginia on February 28.
In the game six different pitchers were needed to record 24 outs despite a solid start by Erik Johansen, who allowed just one earned run over four innings of work. Centerfielder Sal Sciara and first baseman Cody LaBadia each collected a pair of hits each, while rightfielder Roland Hernandez was 3-for-5 in his plate appearances.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Plymouth State heads for warmer climates in New York this weekend as the team opens its campaign on Sunday afternoon against City College of New York at MCU Park on Coney Island in Brooklyn.
Last season the Panthers went 20-20 with a 4-10 mark in Little East Conference play. A league that features two of the perennial powerhouse teams in the nation with both Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut State in the Little East.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Maritime and Southern Vermont will be playing one another for the first time in program history on Sunday afternoon.
The Privateers have met up with the Panthers of Plymouth State four times in recent history with the all-time series split at two wins apiece. In 2012, the Privateers dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Plymouth State by the scores of 6-4 and 5-3.
In the 5-3 loss,
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) drove in a pair of runs while
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) brought around the team's third run. On the hill,
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) pitched well after only allowing two runs over six innings of work while not factoring into the pitching decision.
