Baseball Preview: Quartet of Home Games on Tap for Baseball this Weekend

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 28, 2014) – Following a disappointing home opener on Thursday evening, the Maritiem baseball team continues its home stand with four more games this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
 
On Saturday, the Privateers play host to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) beginning at 9 a.m. on Reinhart Field, earlier this season the Privateers battled the Bears and fell by a 13-3 score while in Florida. The weekend continues with two games against Skyline Conference opponent NYU-Poly on Sunday morning with first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
 
LAST GAME RECAP
On Thursday night, the Privateers fell to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 19-9 in eight innings at a brisk Reinhart Field. Junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) led the team offensively with tree hits, while senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), junior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) also collected multiple hits in the loss.
 
On the hill, junior Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) suffered the loss despite pitching very well in relief in the early portion of his outing. Pfundstein finished the game tossing 5 2/3 innings worth of work including 3 2/3 scoreless innings of work before a four-run hiccup in the fifth frame.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS
St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) is 7-6 on the season thus far including wins in four of its last five games. Most recently, the Bears split a pair with the SUNYIT Wildcats, including a 1-0 win in the second game.
 
Leading the team offensively is junior outfielder Thomas McKenna with his .395 batting average including one home run and eight RBIs. Senior outfielder Joseph Mendez leads the team with 15 runs driven in and also has one home run on the season.
 
In regards to pitching Chris Cutrone leads the team with a 4.12 ERA in 19 2/3 innings worth of work on the mound while accumulating a 2-1 record. Second on the team is Mitch Brigando with a 591 ERA over 10 2/3 innings worth of work. Both Cutrone and Brigando have also picked up one complete game each to this point in the season.
 
SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
NYU-Poly is 0-6 thus far on the year and have yet to play a Skyline Conference contest to this point in the season. The Blue Jays will open up their league schedule on Saturday afternoon at Mount St. Mary in Newburgh, N.Y. before making their way to Throggs Neck on Sunday afternoon for a pair with the Privateers.
 
Kian Downes leads the team with a .294 batting average with five hits on 17 at bats and is second on the team with two RBIs, Peter Finch leads the team with three runs driven in during his 16 at bats on the year.
 
The pitching staff has struggled as Nate Albers leads the team with a 4.67 ERA over his team-leading 12 innings of work to go along with his 0-2 record. Sy Cohen is next on the team with a 5.44 ERA over nine innings of work in his three outings this season.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
Maritime is 10-5 all-time against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) entering play this weekend, which includes the loss earlier this season. The Privateers are on a three-game winning streak against NYU-Poly as the Privateers have accumulated a 15-6 record against Blue Jays of the games on record.

UP NEXT
Maritime takes on a pair of CUNYAC teams with a home contest against Lehman on Wednesday night on Reinhart Field at 7 p.m. The next game takes place on Thursday evening at Morales Field on Staten Island when the Privateers take on the Dolphins in a make-up game from earlier this season.
 
St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) will take on Vaughn in its next set of games on Sunday at 11 a.m. at MCU Park in Brooklyn. NYU-Poly will have a tough test ahead of them with road games against Purchase, Old Westbury and Farmingdale over the next two weeks.
