THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 23, 2014) – In non-conference action on Sunday afternoon, the Maritime baseball team swept a pair from the John Jay Bloodhounds on Reinhart Field. The team opened the day with a 3-2 win, and backed it up with a 10-8 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Privateers plated a run in the first inning as sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) drove home junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) with the game's first run. Sollin reached earlier in the inning on a one-out single, as the catcher ended the opener going 4-for-4 at the plate.

Sollin drove in the second run of the game in the top of the third inning to bring around senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), who started the inning off with a double. The Privateers tacked on another run when freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) grounded out in the fifth inning to plate Galli.

On the mound, junior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) completed the game that he started and did not allow an earned run on six hits. Alsdorf also tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts on the afternoon.

In the second game, Maritime was first to score once again as the Privateers collected three runs in the second inning on some spotty defense by the Bloodhounds. Junior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), and Galli were credited with RBIs in the inning, while junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) took advantage of a muffed throw by John Jay to steal home and start off the scoring in the inning.

McLaughlin started another rally in the top of the second inning with a base knock, Sollin then drove him around with his fifth hit of the day on a double. Sollin moved up to third on a passed ball, and then came in to score on a Doerbecker base knock to put Maritime ahead 5-0.

Maritime freshman starter Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) had allowed one hit over the first two innings, but ran into a speed bump in the third frame. Marks was able to get through the first two outs of the inning without allowing a run in the third, but back-to-back hits by John Jay brought in the first two John Jay runs of the game, while chasing Marks in the process.

Sophomore David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) came on to pitch for the first time this season, and was unable to retire a batter before giving way to freshman Peter McGurty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech), who stemmed the tide. In the inning, John Jay plated seven runs to take its first lead on the day by a 7-5 score.

In the top of the fourth junior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) started off the frame with a single, then stole second, and advanced to third as Sollin singled behind him. Doerbecker picked up the RBI with a groundout to pull the Privateers back within one run. The Bloodhounds got the run right back in the next half inning to give John Jay an 8-6 advantage.

The Privateers tied the game in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) walked, then stole second. Three batters later, Galli came up and drove in Tyler with a base hit, while also advancing to third on a two-base error by the centerfielder. Galli scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch to even the game at eight apiece.

In the top of the seventh inning, the tie was broken as it was once again Tyler to start the rally for Maritime. Freshman Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) pinch ran and stole second base to put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Three batters later, it was once again Galli to come up big with a double to drive in Stewart, and senior Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) to give Maritime a 10-8 advantage.

In line for the win was junior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), who had already pitched two scoreless innings to that point in the game. Very was on to finish what he had started and did just that, as the sidewinder worked around a one- out double to nail down the sweep for the Privateers.

Maritime (4-9, 1-2 Skyline) is scheduled to play its next game at home on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. against Cross-Sound rival Merchant Marine.
