THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 11, 2014) – Coming off its first win of the season last night against Plymouth State, the Maritime baseball team travels to nearby Taft High School in the Bronx to take on Yeshiva in its first Skyline Conference game of the season at 8 p.m.
LAST GAME RECAP
Maritime played a pair of games against Plymouth State on Monday evening at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y. The Privateers fell in the opener by a score of 9-2 then followed that up with a win in the back end of the doubleheader by a 3-2 score.
In the loss, junior
Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) reached base three times with a walk, which included a walk in the ninth inning to score one of the Privateers' two runs. Freshman
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and junior
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) picked up the lone two hits on the first game.
The second game saw Maritime collect four hits including its first home run of the season as junior
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) sent an opposite-field home run over the right centerfield wall in the bottom of the second inning. McLaughlin brought home the deciding run with a groundout in the third inning.
On the mound, freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) tossed 4 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season while senior
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) picked up the save as he went 2 2/3 innings to wrap-up the game.
SCOUTING THE MACCABEES
Yeshiva has started the season 0-4 including a pair of losses last night to City College of NY, also at Baseball Heaven. The Maccabees have been held to just six hits this season, and were also no-hit by the Stevens Ducks in their second game of the season.
Last night, Yeshiva fell by an 11-5 score after the game was tied at five after six innings of the seven-inning contest. The Maccabees followed that up with a 1-0 loss to the Beavers.
On the season, the team has hit just .070 at the plate while striking out 46 times out of 86 at bats. On the mound, Yeshiva has seen more success as the team has yielded 21 earned runs over 26 innings for a combined 5.65 ERA.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Maritime is 11-1 against Yeshiva since the 2008 season and are currently on a three-game winning streak against the Maccabees. Last season the Privateers won their first game on April 10 by the score of 5-1,
Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) pitched a complete game while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out 12.
In the second game of the season series, Maritime blanked Yeshiva 13-0 as
Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) struck out 11 Maccabees and allowing just two hits over seven innings of work. At the dish, no Privateer had more than two hits or more than one RBI in the balanced offensive attack.

Maritime will take the next few days off before heading on the road to Staten Island for a pair of games against the College of Staten Island Dolphins on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
After their game against Maritime tomorrow, Yeshiva will play a conference doubleheader against a solid Old Westbury team at 10 a.m. with the games taking place at Farmingdale due to poor field conditions at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury.
