Basketball Falls to No. 20 Purchase in Saturday Afternoon Action

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. (February 8, 2014) – The Maritime men's basketball team fell on the road to the No. 20 Purchase Panthers by the score of 72-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Purchase College Gymnasium.
 
The Privateers were led by freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) with 13 points, while classmate Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) had 11 points and fellow freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) had 10. On the boards, junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) led the way with 10, while also being tied for the team lead in assists with Halligan as the pair had three helpers each.
 
The contest started very quickly as both teams started out of the gates strong, Purchase opened up the scoring with a three-pointer. Parlow put Maritime's first two points on the board just under a minute into the game as he sank a pair from the free throw line.
 
After Purchase opened up a three-point edge at 5-2, Halligan stepped back and drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give Maritime its first lead of the game at 8-5 with 16:52 left in the first half.
 
Several minutes later, Maritime pulled within one possession at 17-15, but the Panthers rattled off a 9-0 run to open up a 26-15 lead. However, the Privateers refused to fall back any further and put together a string of seven unanswered points as Halligan, junior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) sank a pair of baskets, followed by another three-point basket from Halligan to pull the Privateers back within four at 26-22.
 
Another long stretch began once again, this time for Purchase as the Panthers closed out the half on a 14-0 run to take a 40-22 edge into the locker room.
 
In the second half, the run quickly ended as Parlow got the Privateers started in the period with two free throws once again, before putting in a layup to make the score 42-26.
 
Throughout the second period, Purchase opened up a lead as big as 30 points, but the Privateers battled through the remainder of the game and fell by the score of 72-50. Maritime was led in the second half by Heine, who had all 11 of his points in the half including a last minute three-pointer to pull the Privateers within 22.
 
As a team Maritime was able to keep pace with the nationally ranked Panthers in terms of shooting as Purchase shot 39.2% while Maritime shot 34.1% from the floor. Three-point success rate was an advantage for the Privateers as they hit 36.4% from beyond the arc to Purchase's 33.3% success rate. The Privateers also hit 75.0% from the free throw line, while Purchase struggled at the stripe, as it was 53.8%.
 
Maritime (3-18, 1-13 Skyline) concludes its three-game road trip with a visit to Sage on Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. start against the Gators. Purchase (18-1, 12-0 Skyline) starts up a brief two-game trip with a visit to Yeshiva tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in New York City.
