AUBURNDALE, Fla. (February 23, 2014) – In its final game of the RussMatt Tournament, the Maritime baseball team fell to the Capital (Ohio) Crusaders by a score of 16-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Junior right-hander
Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) got the start for the Privateers and hung up a pair of zeroes over the first two innings to send the game to the bottom of the second. In the frame, junior
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a groundout. Two batters later, senior
Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) singled to push across the first run of the game.
In the top of the third, Capital sent 10 batters to the plate as the team collected six runs on three hits and one Maritime error to take a 6-1 lead. Crusader starting pitcher Robert Fravel made the lead stand as he finished the game throwing 73 pitches over five innings en route to his first win of the season.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw Maritime plate another run as Doerbecker started off the inning with a single. Three batters later, the bases were loaded for freshman
Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade), who sent a fly ball to right field that allowed Doerbecker to tag and score Maritime's second run.
As the game progressed, Maritime brought on freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) to pitch and allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Freshman
Adam Len (Kearny, N.J./Queen of Peace) made his first collegiate appearance and yielded one hit on the mound, but kept the game at 8-2 to send the game to the bottom half of the 8th.
The top of the 9th inning saw Capital bring across eight more runners on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Junior
James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and sophomore
Chris Mott (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) combined to pitch the inning on 46 pitches.
Alsdorf took the loss after 103 pitches and allowing four earned runs on three hits. Marks allowed a pair of runs on two hits after 23 pitches in one inning of relief. Len pitched a one-hit eighth inning, followed by Very and Mott in the ninth.
Maritime (0-4, 0-0 Skyline) will return to New York to take on D'Youville for four games next weekend at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York. The games begin on March 5 at 5 p.m. Capital (1-1, 0-0 OAC) takes on Franklin (Indiana) tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Florida.
