THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (February 19, 2014) –
Junior guard T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) finished the game with 15 points, and freshman Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) collected 10 points as the Maritime Privateers finished their home schedule with a 75-51 loss to the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Wednesday evening at Riesenberg Gym.

Prior to the game the basketball team honored departing senior Nick Dunbar (Queens, N.Y./Information Technology) with an on-court ceremony to thank the Queens-native for his service to the program. Dunbar finished the game with three points as well as one steal and one assist.

The Privateers started the game with the early 2-0 lead as Gibson sank a jumper just 27 seconds into the game. After the Dolphins responded with four unanswered points, Maritime answered back as Heine tied the game at four. Gibson then gave the Privateers the lead with a basket at 17:21 left in the opening period.

Mount St. Vincent took the lead with a three-point basket with 15:40 left in the half and didn't turn back there as the Dolphins held the lead for the remainder of the period. Mount St. Vincent took its largest lead of the half into the locker room at halftime with a 36-17 advantage over its hosts.

In the second half, the Dolphins opened up the stanza with a three-point basket but Maritime came back with four unanswered points as junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) and Gibson drilled back-to-back field goals to trim the lead back under 20 points. With 7:55 left in regulation, Mount St. Vincent opened up its biggest lead of the game at 33 points, however Maritime refused to go down the stretch of the game quietly.

Heine started the comeback with a three-pointer, followed by a layup from classmate Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham). Rookie Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) got in on the scoring action with a good free throw, as did sophomore Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) with a pair from the stripe. Freshman Darien Bryan (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) also netted one shot from the line to help cut the lead down to 28 with 3:47 left in the game.

Sophomore guard Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) helped by swishing a pair from the free throw line, followed by Gibson hitting a layup and the ensuing free throw shot to pull Maritime within 21 points. Oliva then hit a layup with 73 seconds left, but Mount St. Vincent closed out the period with three points to finish the game with a 75-51 victory.

The Privateers finished the game shooting 34.0% from the field and 23.5% from beyond the arc, while the Dolphins were 50.9% from the floor and 35.7% from the land of the three. Mount St. Vincent also outrebounded Maritime by a 40-33 margin, and also won the turnover battle by a 21-17 differential.

Maritime (3-21, 1-16) will finish the year on Saturday evening with a road contest against Yeshiva at 8:30 p.m. in New York City. Mount St. Vincent (8-16, 6-11 Skyline) will finish its regular season on the road against NYU-Poly for a 2 p.m. start in Brooklyn.
