THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2014) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury, 72-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The loss drops the Privateers to 3-20 (1-15 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 13-9 (9-6 Skyline).
Maritime had four players score in double figures led by sophomore
Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville), who drained 13 points off the bench. Freshman
Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) contributed 12 points, while juniors
T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) and
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gibson recorded a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and Corley dished out seven assists and also had four steals.
Westbury charged out to a 10-point lead nine minutes into the game, but the Privateers answered back quickly with a 12-2 run over the next four-plus minutes to come within two, 22-20, at 6:24. Play was back-and-forth from there and Gibson hit a three-pointer at 4:10 that gave Maritime its first and only lead of the game, 25-24. The Panthers then went on a 7-3 run, however, to end the first half up by the score of 31-28.
In the second half, a three-pointer by freshman
Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) (eight points) tied the game at 31-31. Old Westbury slowly built its lead up to double-digits, though, reaching a ten-point advantage (47-37) at 13:24. Heine would hit two three points at 9:58 and 6:07 that both cut the Panthers' lead to just eight points, but Westbury finished strong, eventually winning by the 72-58 score.
The Panthers were led by junior Ray Parker, who scored a game-high 25 points. Classmate Omari Trebuse recorded 16 points and fellow junior Floyd Leroy contributed 12. Senior Andrew Andries led Old Westbury with 10 rebounds.
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday night for their final home game of the 2013-14 season. They will play host to Bronx-rival Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gym. Prior to the game, Maritime will hold a special Senior Night Ceremony for lone senior
