THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (February 1, 2014) – Junior guard T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) had his second-highest scoring output of the season with 32 points on Saturday afternoon as the Maritime Privateer basketball team fell to the NYU-Poly Jays on Saturday by the score of 69-63 at Riesenberg Gym.
Maritime started the game with six straight points including a dunk from Gibson to make the score 4-0 at 17:37 of the first half. After the Jays answered with their first basket of the afternoon, freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) responded with a three-point basket to give Maritime a seven-point edge. The Privateers then picked up a nine-point lead as Gibson collected his second jam of the half off a pass from classmate Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy).
After NYU-Poly converted on a pair of free throws, Gibson connected on a three-point basket to jumpstart a 7-0 run for Maritime. Freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) hit a fast break layup, followed by Corley going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to give the Privateers a 14-point advantage.
NYU-Poly then rattled off a 23-3 run and took its first lead of the game in the process and led 29-23 with 5:49 left in the opening stanza. With the game tied heading into the final two minutes, it was once again Gibson to spark the Privateers with a three-point basket to put Maritime ahead by three, which was quickly answered by a Jay layup to send Maritime into the locker room up by one.
In the second half, NYU-Poly started with an 8-1 run to take a 43-37 lead with 14:19 left in regulation. Maritime pulled within one position as Gibson sank a layup off a pass from freshman Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols).
With 7:18 left in the half, Gibson sank a basket and converted on the and-one free throw to tie the game at 54. After a Jay turnover, Gibson took advantage of the takeaway once again as he sank a pair of back-to-back three-pointers to put the Privateers up by six. Less than a minute later, Halligan stepped back for a three-pointer to put Maritime ahead 63-56.
NYU-Poly then took advantage of cold shooting and giveaways by Maritime as the Jays rattled off a 13-0 run to close out the game and escape with the 69-63 win.
Gibson ended the game shooting 13-for-20 including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, while also collecting six rebounds and three steals on the game. Leading the way on the glass once again was Parlow, who collected eight boards. Halligan was second on the team as he reached double-figures with 11 points. As a team, the Privateers shot 41.8% from the floor, which was the team's second highest in conference games this year.
