Final ResultsBRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Maritime Swimming & Diving Team competed on Friday evening in Skyline Conference action with the men's team knocking off Sarah Lawrence by the score of 145-56, while the women's team dropped both head-to-head bouts against Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's (LI).
Maritime's Women's Swimming team squared off against both Sarah Lawrence, and St. Joseph's (LI) as the Golden Eagles do not sponsor a men's swimming program. In the first event of the night, Maritime's 200-Yard Medley Relay team of senior
Mariel VanderLinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy ), juniors
Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and
Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), and freshman
Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) came in second with a time of 2:08.59.
Sophomore
Ashley O'Brien (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) came in third in the 200-Yard Freestyle, as she beat out a Sarah Lawrence swimmer by just one one-hundredth of a second (2:26.35). Rookie
Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) had a second place performance in the 50-Yard Freestyle (28.34).
Maritime collected its only victory of the night as rookie
Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled) eased to an eight-second win the in the 200-Yard Individual Medley (2:31.71), with senior
Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) coming in third (2:48.27). Hobbs then came out and came in second by just seven one-hundredths of a second in the 100-Yard Butterfly (1:05.12).
Sophomore
Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) had a fourth place finish in the 100-Yard Freestyle (1:05.24), followed by VanderLinden collecting a second place finish in the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:09.67). Crandall finished off the individual portion of the night with a third place performance in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:24.86).
In yet another close battle, the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team of Hobbs, VanderLinden, Leahy and Stanton finished just two-tenths of a second of the pace with a time of 1:51.62.
On the men's side, the team won eight of its 11 events that started off with a win in the 200-Yard Medley Relay as senior Zach Haughn, sophomore Craig Lyon, and seniors Daniel Hemmer and Collin McNamara picked up the win (1:45.71).
Junior Matthew Collins won the 1,000-Yard Freestyle (11:33.64), followed by sophomore Robert Lewis (12:18.53), and rookie Luke Doherty (12:19.90). Freshman Douglas Russell continued his success in the 200-Yard Freestyle as he finished with a two-second win (1:55.97). McNamara followed up with a victory by just two-tenths of a second in the 50-Yard Freestyle (22.80).
Several events later, the Privateers swept the top-three spots in the 100-Yard Freestyle as junior Peter Skerys (55.51), senior Jimmy Jorgenson (55.97), and freshman Patrick Ward (59.06) all had sub-minute times. Junior Matthew Collins also had a sub-minute time (59.36) in the 100-Yard Backstroke, inching out Haughn (59.41) by just five one-hundredths of a second.
The 500-Yard Freestyle Relay event saw Russell finish in second by just half a second (5:20.26). Junior Brendan Erskine had a victory in the final individual event of the night as he swam to a time of 1:05.34 in the 100-Yard Breaststroke. The relay team of Skerys, Russell, McNamara and freshman John Dean capped off the night with a win in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay event with a time of 1:35.10.
After the conference matchup on Friday evening, the Privateer Swimming & Diving Teams will compete again on Saturday as Maritime travels to nearby Merchant Marine for an invitational event in Kings Point, N.Y.
