Swimming & Diving Sweeps Lehman with Dominant Effort

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Swimming & Diving team put together its strongest effort of the season as the team combined to win 20 of 24 events against the Lehman Lightning on Monday evening at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.

The women's team knocked off the Lightning by the score of 130-74, while the men controlled the night against Lehman with a 147-59 mark. The women picked up 11 wins in the 12 events they took part in, with the lone Lehman win came in the final individual women's event.
 
Senior Mariel VanderLinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy ), along with junior Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), sophomore Rhiannon Galletta (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), and classmate Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) got the night started off right with a win in the 200-Yard Medley Relay with a 34-second win over the pair of Lehman quartets.
 
Senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) collected a win in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle, followed by freshman Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earning a win in the 200-Yard Freestyle. The winning streak then continued with a victory by freshman Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) in the 50-Yard Freestyle, then another by Soulagnet in the 200-Yard Individual Medley.
 
The next event was the 1-Meter Diving event, with freshman Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earning a victory in the first home diving event for the Privateers this season. Hobbs picked up a win in a well-contested 100-yard Butterfly event, and Stanton registered another win in the 100-Yard Freestyle.
 
VanderLinden went on for her second win of the night with a victory in the 100-Yard Backstroke that was followed by a win from sophomore Ashley O'Brien (Middle Village, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy). During the final individual women's race of the night, Maritime's win streak was snapped as Crandall finished just seven seconds off the pace during the 100-Yard Breaststroke.
 
The team capped off the night with a victory in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as Hobbs, Leahy, Stanton and VanderLinden sealed the victory with nine more points in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.
 
On the men's side, the Privateers were just as dominant in the early going of the meet with a win in the 200-Yard Medley Relay with senior Zach Haughn, sophomore Craig Lyon, and seniors Dan Hemmer and Collin McNamara winning by just over two seconds in the relay over Lehman.
 
Senior Matthew Collins won in a close battle with Lehman and won by a close one-second differential during the 1,000-Yard Freestyle. Douglas Russell picked up a win in the 200-Yard Freestyle, followed by McNamara earning his second win of the night in the 50-Yard Freestyle win a time of 22:48. The Privateer win streak was snapped in the 10th event of the night, just ahead of sophomore Sam Dratch diving his way to victory in the 1-Meter Dive.
 
Hemmer picked up where he left off in the swimming events, as he picked up a sub-minute time in the 100-Yard Butterfly. Haughn then followed two events later with a win in the100-Yard Backstroke posting a time of just under one minute as well. Russell finished first in the 500-Yard Freestyle to cap off his evening in individual races.
 
In the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, Maritime swept the board as the team of Haughn, junior Peter Skerys, Russell, and McNamara earned the win by over 12 seconds over the next two Privateer squads. Maritime's second team to the finish was comprised of freshmen Adrian Klein, Kevin Nelson, junior Brian Brow, and freshman Patrick Ward, while the third place team was made up of junior Tore McCarthy, sophomore Charles Gallagher, Dratch, and rookie Patrick O'Dea.
 
Overall, both the men's and women's teams had their highest point outputs of the season heading into Friday's Skyline Conference meet against Sarah Lawrence for both teams, in addition the women's side will be battling St. Joseph's with the event beginning at 7 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
