(Oct. 4, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost its Skyline home-opener on Saturday afternoon against Mount St. Mary at a rainy Reinhart Field by the final score of 1-0. The Privateers fall to an even 5-5 overall on the season (1-1 Skyline), while the Knights improve to 7-2-1 (4-0 Skyline).
Both teams had a number of great opportunities in the opening half of play, but neither were able to find the back of the net. The Privateers had two shots on goal, the first was the best chance of the half in the 12th minute by junior
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)), who fired a shot from just above the 18-yard box, but Mount St. Mary junior keeper Austin Peluso made a diving save to his left to keep the ball from going in the bottom right corner of the net. Junior
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was forced to make five saves in the first half.
The lone goal of the game came in the 72nd minute of play. Mount St. Mary junior Michael Ennis carried the ball in on the left side and beat a defender low before passing the ball into the middle of the eight-yard box where it met the foot of classmate Jarrett Armstrong, who fired a shot that Weber slowed down, but the force of the shot put the ball through his legs and it trickled just over the goal line.
The Knights outshot the Privateers by a final count of 16-8. Weber ended the day with six saves, while his counterpart for Mount, Peluso, recorded three stops in the victory.
Maritime returns to action on Thursday night, Oct. 9, with another home Skyline matchup, this against Farmingdale State. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
