THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Coming off of a bye week, the Maritime football team gets back to action this Saturday as the Privateers open up conference play with a 2 p.m. matchup against the Mount Ida Mustangs in Newton, Mass.

All-Time Series
Maritime and Mount Ida have split their all-time matchups with each side winning four of the eight contests in program history. The Privateers have won four of the last five matchups including last season's 16-7 win on Reinhart Field.
 
In the 2013 edition, then-fullback Dwayne Lacroix (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) picked up a touchdown to start off the scoring, with Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) adding the extra point. Dietrich then went on to add three field goals, including a 44-yarder for the longest of his sophomore season.
 
Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was amongst the team leaders with seven tackles, while also picking up a pair of sacks in the win. Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) also had a big game with six tackles and picked up a pair of fumbles with 39 return yards as well. Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) had a pair of pass breakups in the secondary.

The Privateers have been running the ball very well in the early going through the non-conference season. In contrast to the other ECFC teams, Maritime has three of the league's top four rushers…

Calm Before the Storm
Six of the eight ECFC teams had byes last week, with only Anna Maria and Castleton State playing contests a week ago. Catholic upended Anna Maria in a lopsided affair by a 54-25 score, while the Spartans of Castleton knocked off Alfred State by a 36-23 margin.

In addition to Maritime and Mount Ida in a key conference matchup, another conference contest to watch will by Norwich at Husson at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Privateers
Maritime continues its month-long stretch away from the friendly confines of Reinhart Field with a road matchup against Mount Ida, after a road loss at the hands of the Mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on September 20 by the score of 34-17.
 
In the loss, Gardner led the team offensively with 104 yards on the ground, while Caneparo collected 99 yards in the running game including a 71-yard touchdown run, while Chilcott also had a touchdown run and amassed 77 yards on the ground. The passing game was highlighted by junior wide receiver Andrew Short (Covington, La./St. Paul's), who hauled in three Chilcott passes for 53 yards.
 
As a team, the offense has collected 908 yards on the ground to average just over 300 yards on the ground per game, while picking up seven rushing touchdowns through the team's first three contests. The passing game has also picked up a total of 237 yards through three games, with one passing touchdown on the season. Overall the offense has picked up 1,145 yards in total offense on the year.
 
Defensively at Kings Point, a pair of linebackers led Maritime, as Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) and Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) were both credited with 11 tackles each. Freshman Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) collected nine stops from his defensive back position, while O'Brien collected eight tackles and had 1.5 sacks to set the program record for most sacks in a single career.
 
For the season, Knight leads the way with 25 tackles, followed closely by O'Brien with 23 wrap-ups and Coffiey has 22 of his own. Junior Andrew Auriemma (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) has 19 tackles, while fellow lineman Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) has 16; defensive backs Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) and Conte also have 16 on the year.
 
On special teams, Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) has converted on 4-of-6 field goals with two coming from 44-yards or longer. Rookie Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) has an average of 62.7 yards per kickoff as he has accumulated 941 yards on his 15 kickoffs. Sophomore punter John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) is averaging just shy of 33 yards-per-punt on his 11 boots this season.
 
Klass and sophomore Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) have split punt-return duties and have averaged 16.6 yards per return. On kickoffs, Caneparo, Klass and Cardinal-Charles have all had success on returns as the trio has combined to average 18.4 yards-per-return.
 
Scouting the Mustangs
Mount Ida comes into Saturday's conference opener in search of its first win of the season. The Mustangs dropped their first three matchups to UMass-Dartmouth (21-14), Plymouth State (30-24) and Springfield (47-16) to begin their 2014 campaign.
 
The Mustang offense has been a pass-first offense through its first three contests as senior quarterback Jewad Yatim has completed 32 of his 74 passing attempts for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Yatim has also turned the ball over seven times with four interceptions and four fumbles on the year, losing three.
 
Also on offense, freshman back Jaleel Battle leads the way with 261 yards on the ground with one touchdown. Junior running back Melquan Pinkey has 113 yards as well. Sophomore wide-out Matt Greenman lead the team in receptions with 11 catches for 187 yards and has accounted for 2 of the 3 Mustang receiving touchdowns.
 
On defense, sophomore Sean Chinova leads the team with 34 tackles and also has a sack, which is included in his team-leading five tackles for a loss in yardage. Senior Kalyn Smithson has 25 tackles, while Johnny Quinones has 20 wrap-ups, including one sack on the year as well.
 
The special teams unit has a pair of underclassmen handle the kicking games, as Tyler Rodgers is 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, and 6-of-7 on extra point opportunities. Rookie Devin Broadley has netted 619 yards on 16 punts for an average of 38.7 yards per kick. Jovan Wilkins and Dejhiam Williams have split kickoff returns as the pair has combined for 17 returns and 362 yards.
 
Up Next
After tomorrow's game, Maritime will return home next Saturday, after a month away with a matchup against the Husson Eagles at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
 
Mount Ida will likely face its toughest road test on the season, when the Mustangs travel to Northfield, Vermont for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Norwich Cadets on October 11.
