THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer defeated visiting Purchase College, 1-0, in Skyline Conference action on Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers improve to 6-6-1 (2-2-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers fall to 6-6-1 (3-1-1 Skyline).
Â
        Sophomore
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) wasted little time putting Maritime on the board, as he found the back of the net in just the second minute of action. Freshman
Brett Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) lobbed the ball in from the right wing and towards junior
Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) positioned at the top of the six-yard box. It bounced off of his body to a wide open Donnelly, who charged forward and gunned the ball into the net for his fourth of the season.
Â
The Panthers had a chance shortly after that and actually found the back of the net on a shot from the top of the box, but it was called back as offsides was called against them, negating the goal.
Â
Play the rest of the first half was pretty even after that, as the shots turned out to be in favor of Purchase, 9-8. Junior keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was forced to make four saves in the opening half, while his counterpart from Purchase, junior Esteban Aguilar, turned aside three shots.
Â
Purchase nearly scored early in the second half, but Weber pushed aside the shot past the right post to maintain the lead. The Panthers turned on some momentum and had many of their shots in the half wind up on goal, but Weber made five saves the entire second half to finish with nine on the night in the shutout victory.
