THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2014) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury, 66-49, on Thursday night at the Panthers' Clark Athletic Center. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 3-8 (1-3 Skyline), while OW improves to 8-4 (4-1 Skyline).
Junior
T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) led Maritime with 13 points on the night off the bench, while freshman
Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) and junior
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) \both scored eight points apiece. Corley also brought down a team-high 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists.
The Panthers came out strong, building up a nine-point lead in a little over five minutes. Old Westbury's lead hit double-figures when junior Omari Trebuse hit a layup at 9:58 of the first to put OW up 22-11. The advantage got as high as 16 points, 39-23, at the 1:29 mark, but the Privateers scored the last five points of the half to go into the halftime break down by 11, 39-28.
It was Maritime that began the second half well, cutting the deficit down to as little as seven points, 45-38, after a layup by Gibson at 13:44. Gibson scored another two of his eight second-half points on another layup at 10:48 that made the score 48-40 in favor of the Panthers, but Old Westbury held the Privateers without a field goal for the next nine-plus minutes. OW went on a 17-6 run over that time and built the lead up to a game-high 21 points (65-44) with 3:47 to play. Maritime ended the half on a 5-1 run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Four players scored in double-figures for Old Westbury, led by junior Floyd Leroy, who drained a game-high 15 points with bringing down 11 rebounds. Junior Ray Parker scored 13 points, Trebuse had 11 points and freshman Mark Gjonlekaj tallied 10. Senior Andrew Andries led all players with 14 rebounds.
The Privateers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, with a road conference game at Mount St. Mary up in Newburgh, N.Y. Tipoff will be at 1 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Center.
