THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (January 29, 2014) – In Skyline Conference action on Wednesday night, the Maritime Privateer basketball team fell at home to the Farmingdale Rams by the score of 66-51. The Privateers were led by sophomore Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) with 14 points off the bench, while freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) was second on the team with 10 points.
The Privateers got off to a slow start after the opening tip as Farmingdale jumped out to a quick 10-point lead just 5:33 into the contest. Maritime responded as McNamara hit one of his two three-point baskets on the night to trim the lead to single digits.
Farmingdale took advantage of several Maritime miscues over the ensuing minutes and opened up its largest lead of the half at 16 points with 5:36 left in the opening stanza. Maritime answered as McNamara hit his second three-pointer followed by a layup from junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy), to pull the Privateers within 11 points.
The Rams regained their 16-point lead with 2:19 to go, but McNamara responded with a layup in the closing minute to send Maritime into the locker room down by a 36-22 score.
In the second half of the game, it was Farmingdale to get off to a sluggish start allowing Maritime to get back into the game. Halligan hit a layup, followed by a jump shot from freshman Wesley Welle (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen), who added his and-one free throw to trim the deficit to single digits.
As the game fell under 10 minutes to go in regulation, Maritime got hot from the field as McNamara sank back-to-back layups. Freshman Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) got in on the scoring action with a pair of field goals over the span of 82 seconds. Halligan then drilled a three-pointer followed by another from long-range by senior Nick Dunbar (Queens, N.Y./Information Technology) to pull back within seven points.
The teams exchanged shots as time was working against Maritime with 3:47 left on the clock. Farmingdale closed out the game with a 9-2 run for the 15-point victory at 66-51.
Final stats on the game saw Farmingdale outshoot Maritime by a 44.2% to 33.3% differential from the field. The Rams also took advantage of their three-point chances, hitting 7-of-15, while Maritime went 6-for-26 from beyond the arc.
Freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) led the team with his second-straight strong outing on the glass with eight rebounds, while Corley added seven boards of his own and Heine had five off the bench.
Maritime (3-15, 1-10 Skyline) will wrap-up its three-game home stand with a matchup against NYU-Poly on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. earlier this season Maritime earned a 13-point win over the Blue Jays. Farmingdale (12-5, 8-2 Skyline) will return home for a 1 p.m. tip this Saturday as they jockey for position in the league with Skyline-leading Purchase, earlier this season the Panthers knocked off the Rams by 20 points.
