Men's Basketball Upended by Yeshiva in Saturday Conference Action

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (January 25, 2014) – The Maritime Privateers fell in a Saturday evening matchup with the Yeshiva Maccabees by the score of 61-52 at Riesenberg Gym. Junior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) led the Privateers with 21 points, while freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) set a new career-high with 10 rebounds to lead the team.

In the opening period Maritime began with a splash as freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) drilled a three-pointer from the corner to put the Privateers up 3-0. With time progressing through the half the game was tied at 12 apiece with 13:42 to go in the frame as Parlow put in a layup of a dish from junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy).

The Maccabees opened up a seven-point edge with 11:56 to go, and Maritime was able to close the gap to a two-point deficit on six occasions down the stretch of the half. Yeshiva closed out the period on a 5-0 run to take a 34-27 lead into the halftime break.

After the intermission, Yeshiva sank a three-point basket to take its first double-digit lead of the contest with 57 seconds off the clock in the half.

With 13:11 to go in the game, Gibson drilled a basket from beyond the arc to trim the deficit to six points but Yeshiva responded with a long-range jumper of their own. Ten minutes passed by and the Maccabees had their largest lead of the contest at 15 points, but Maritime fought back through the final minutes.

Corley sank one free throw to get the team back on a scoring rhythm followed by Gibson hitting a layup. Parlow then sank a layup of his own, followed by another layup from Gibson hitting a fast break layup off a pass from Corley to pull back within six with 47 seconds left in regulation.

Yeshiva closed out the game making three free throws to seal the nine-point win at 61-52.

On the game, Maritime shot 34.4% from the field while Yeshiva sank 46.9% of its shots from the field. Rebounds were close in the game as the Maccabees pulled down 42 boards while the Privateers had 35 boards including 10 from Parlow and six from Gibson. Freshman Wesley Welle (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) was the game-leader with a pair of blocks as he accounted for half of the blocked shots by the Privateers on the evening.

Maritime (3-14, 1-9 Skyline) will next play host to Farmingdale on Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. start against the Rams at Riesenberg Gym. Yeshiva (5-8, 3-5 Skyline) will also be home for its next contest against NYU-Poly on Monday evening at 8 p.m.
