Junior
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) scored 21 points and dished out six assists to lead Maritime, while also matching the team-high with five rebounds. Classmate
T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) contributed 13 points and four boards and freshman
Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) chipped in with nine points.
The Privateers took an early 3-0 lead on a three-pointer by Halligan, but the Dolphins quickly answered and took control by building up an eight-point lead, 12-4, at 13:06 of the first. However, Maritime responded with a 12-4 run of its own over the next five minutes to tie the game up at 16. Action was back-and forth from there until, down by four late, Corley hit two straight layups, the second part of a three-point play, to give the Privateers a 27-27 lead that they took into the halftime break.
In the second half, CMSV regained the lead on an early layup, but freshman
Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) responded with a three-pointer to put the Privateers up 30-28 at 18:17. Mount slowly started to build a lead, getting to as high as a nine-point advantage, 44-35, at 12:57, but the Privateers wouldn't go quietly. In the next two minutes, Maritime went on a 9-2 run to come within two points, 46-44, with 11:16 to play.
The same exact thing happened about three minutes later, with the Dolphins opening up a nine-point lead and the Privateers responding to come back within two, this time with 6:41 to play. Mount St. Vincent stuck to the story of the night taking the advantage in play again and the Dolphins were able to hit a double-digit lead after two free throws made the score 66-56 at 3:56. Only once did their lead fall back below 10 until the final buzzer sounded, resulting in the 16-point win.
Mount junior Antonio Johnson led all players in the game with 25 points. Senior Gerard Fraser recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Jesse Regina added 12 points as well and senior Brandon Serrano rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Maritime returns to action this Saturday night, Jan. 25, with a home contest against Yeshiva University. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. at Riesenberg Gym.
