THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (January 20, 2014) – Junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had his third double-double of the season as he had 19 points and 14 rebounds as well as a team-high seven assists, but it was not enough as the Maritime basketball team fell at Riesenberg Gym on Monday evening to the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles by the score of 72-64.
In the first half, St. Joseph's jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but the Privateers trimmed the lead in half as freshman Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) hit a layup. Both sides then continued to exchange baskets through the ensuing minutes as the Golden Eagles were unable to pull more than three points away as Ryan and Corley answered St. Joseph baskets with shots of their own.
With 10:28 remaining in the half, St. Joseph's began to take advantage of missed shots and turnovers by the Privateers and took its largest lead of the half at nine points.
Maritime chipped away at the lead through the latter portion of the half as freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) sank a jumper with 6:09 to go in the half to pull his team back within four points. The Privateers got as close as three points on three occasions through the remainder of the half but the Golden Eagles surged with five unanswered points to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room for halftime.
To start the second half St. Joseph's opened up a 10-point edge just under three minutes into the period, but Maritime played strong defense over the next several minutes and took advantage of the opportunities to trim the lead back down.
Parlow started off the Maritime run with four straight points, while sophomore Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) sank a pair at the charity stripe to pull the team within six. Freshman Wesley Welle (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) drilled a jumper then Parlow did as well to get within four at 13:26 to go in the game.
Junior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) then ignited the crowd with a big three-point basket to pull the Privateers all the way back within one point. With 9:38 to go in the period, Parlow tied the game at 51 with a fast break layup.
After the Maritime make, the Golden Eagles went on a quick 6-0 run to regain their lead as they used up several minutes of the clock, the run helped propel St. Joseph's to a nine-point lead with 2:32 to go in the game.
Maritime tried to foul to stay close in the game, but St. Joseph's made its shots on the line and held on for the eight-point victory.
Corley ended with the team-high in points with 19, while Gibson was second on the team with 12 and Parlow finished with 11 points. Corley also had the team lead with 14 rebounds and seven assists and also had five steals to finish the game with the solid all-around effort while playing all 40 minutes.
Maritime (3-12, 1-7 Skyline) will travel for their only road game in a seven-game stretch this Thursday when the unit travels to Mount St. Vincent for an 8 p.m. tip. St. Joseph's (4-10, 3-4 Skyline) will continue its three-game road swing with a trip to Farmingdale on Thursday for an 8 p.m. start.
