Late Rally Falls Short as Privateers Drop Skyline Matchup to Sage

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (January 18, 2014) – The Maritime Privateers basketball team fell in Skyline Conference action to the Sage Gators on Saturday afternoon by the score of 74-54. The Privateers were led by sophomore guard Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting on the game.

Maritime also got double figures from freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham), who finished the game with 12 points. Freshman Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) also contributed with eight points off the bench and also led the team in rebounding with six, classmate Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) had a career best four blocks on the game.

McNamara kicked off the scoring with a layup just 21 seconds into the game to put the Privateers on top 2-0. Sage rattled off back-to-back three-point baskets but Halligan responded for Maritime with a three-pointer of his own to pull the Privateers back within one.

The Gators pulled away with a quick 10-3 run to take an eight-point edge with half the period gone by. Eventually, Sage took its largest lead of the half at 19 with just under five minutes left in the period.

Maritime closed out the half as McNamara sank a three-pointer and a layup, while Halligan hit a layup to finish off the half on a 7-0 run to head into the locker room down by 12 at 36-24.

In the second half, the Gators opened up the period with an 11-0 run to open up its largest lead to that point at 23. The streak ended as it was once again Halligan to pull up for a three-point basket to trim the lead back down.

With Sage leading by 21 with 10:52 left in regulation, the Maritime defense began to respond with several key stops and forced turnovers and rattled off a 16-4 run over the next four minutes of the game to pull back within nine points at 6:28 left in the half.

The run was highlighted by contributions from all five players on the court, as McNamara led the way with four points while Heine added a three-point basket, as did junior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy).

Sage was able to stop the Privateer threat and capitalize on their chances and pulled back away to a 20-point lead which is where the final score stood at 74-54 as the final horn sounded.

As a team, Maritime shot 19-of-49 from the floor, while Sage went 26-of-50 from the field. Both teams were successful from beyond the arc as Maritime was 9-for-20 and Sage finished the game 7-for-11.

Maritime (3-11, 1-6 Skyline) will look have a quick turnaround for its next game which takes place on Monday evening at 7 p.m. as the Privateers take on St. Joseph's (LI) for the first time this season. Sage (9-5, 6-2 Skyline) returns home for a Tuesday evening non-conference showdown against the Canton Kangaroos for a 7 p.m. tip.
