THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (January 14, 2014) – The Maritime Privateers men's basketball team dropped its first home game of the 2014 calendar year on Tuesday evening by the score of 84-46 to the Purchase Panthers. Freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) led the team with 13 points including a team-high three three-point baskets on the night.
The rebounding differential was a big part of the game as Purchase outrebounded Maritime by a 56-29 on the night. Points in the paint also proved to be a difference in the outcome as the Panthers netted 38 to the Privateer 14 points in the key.
The game began with Purchase opening up a four-point edge which Maritime recovered from and pulled within a basket after a pair of free throws from freshman Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach). Purchase then rattled off a 20-3 run and opened up a 16-point advantage.
Through the waning minutes of the opening period, the Panthers opened up a 24-point lead. Maritime closed out the period with a sophomore Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) hitting a layup with two seconds left to send the Privateers into the halftime break down by 20.
Maritime opened up with five points out of the break, but Purchase regained its 20-point lead with 16:28 to go in the period. The lead ballooned up to 32 points with 10:52 to go in the period, but Halligan drilled a three-point basket to end the run.
After a McNamara three-pointer with 3:11 left in the game, Purchase netted eight straight points to close out the game and come away with the 84-46 victory.
Junior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) was second on the team in scoring to finish the game as he contributed with 12 points off the bench.
Maritime (3-10, 1-5 Skyline) will be in action again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Sage as they will also host a Lone Survivor Game with more details coming later this week against in the preview for the Sage. Purchase (11-0, 5-0 Skyline) will return to the court on Saturday against NYU-Poly at 12 p.m.
