OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team played Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury to a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods on Saturday afternoon in both teams' league openers. The Privateers move to 3-3-2 (0-0-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers record goes to 3-3-1 (0-0-1 Skyline).
Â
It was Old Westbury that struck first in the game, as senior Michael Bayne got one past sophomore keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) off a pass from sophomore Anthony Ippolito in the 22nd minute. Maritime responded just 16 minutes later, when junior
Matt Ciruzzi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) evened the game up with a rifle of a shot from outside the 18-yard box. The goal was assisted by sophomore
Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway Jr.-Sr.). The Panthers finished the half with three more shots, but the score remained 1-1.
Â
Weber was tested often in the second half, as Old Westbury fired 11 shots (just five on goal) and the second-year starter turned aside each of the five. The Panthers' senior Marcelo Guardado made two saves in the second half and both goalies kept the ball out of the net, forcing golden goal overtime to be played.
Â
The Privateers had the only shot of the first overtime, but senior
Dave Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac)'s (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) attempt was saved by Guardado. In the second 10-minute period, Old Westbury controlled the play, firing off four shots within first four minutes. Only one shot was on goal, however, and Weber made the save to keep the score tied at 1, where the game would end.
Â
Weber finished the game with nine saves, while Guardado made three. Old Westbury outshot the Privateers, 26-8 on the day.
