THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 6, 2013) – For the first time this year the Privateers baseball squad swept a doubleheader and it came against St. Joseph's Brooklyn who earlier in the 2013 season had swept a doubleheader away from Maritime. The Privateers would explode for 27 runs in Saturday's twin billing, winning the first contest 11-1 and the second by a score of 16-10. With both wins Maritime now improves their record to 7-14.
In the first game, the Privateers got the scoring started when senior
Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) doubled in sophomore
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist). Semler would eventually score on an error by the centerfielder making the score 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
In the third, Maritime would add to their lead when sophomore
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) started by hitting a RBI single plating junior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea). Senior
Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run. Next up at bat was freshman
Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) who drove in two on a single down the right field line. Junior
Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) would tack on another run by smacking a double to right center to make the score 7-1 giving them a lead they wouldn't give up.
Junior
Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) earned the victory afer pitching four innings and allowing just one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Junior
Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also pitched well out of relief, tossing three shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Galli had a fine a game going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Game two became a run parade for both teams. The Bears would jump out to a 2-0 lead on on junior Michael Cundari's double to left center in the first. The Privateers would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning putting up three runs of their own highlighted by senior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac)'s (Yonkers, N.Y. / Stepinac) two run homer.
St. Joe's would eventually take the lead again in the second scoring three runs on a two RBI single by sophomore Thomas McKenna and senior Kevin Diaz's RBI single that gave the Bears a 5-3 advantage but Maritime would tie the game again on two more occasions when they scored two more in the second to make the score 5-5 and one more in the third to make it 6-6.
The Privateers big innings came in the fourth and the fifth when they scored a total of ten runs, four in the fourth and six in the fifth having a 16-7 lead – a lead they would not relinquish.
Semler had quite a second game, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Martinez also had his best game of the year, going 2-for-4 with a two run blast and also scored a run.
Bears junior right fielder Joseph Mendez also contributed with a three homer in the sixth; he went 1-for-3 in the second game.
Maritime will be back at it tomorrow when they host the Farmingdale Rams in a conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
