THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 26, 2013) – The Maritime baseball team defeated NYU-Poly 22-4 in a mercy-shortened game Friday night at Reinhart Field to close out the Skyline Conference regular season. The Privateers improve to 14-19 (8-8 Skyline) on the year, while the Jays fall to 3-8 (1-13 Skyline).
Junior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) led the offense with a game-high six RBIs after going 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. He also scored two runs on the night.
Freshman
D'Juan Seymour (Nassau, Bahamas/Rabun Gap) contributed four RBIs on the night on a 4-for-5 performance from the plate. He also recorded a game-high five runs. Junior
Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Five other Privateers registered a run batted in.
Maritime also took advantage of 14 costly errors by NYU-Poly throughout the game.
Junior pitcher
Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned the victory on the mound after tossing five innings and allowing four runs on three hits, while striking out eight. He moves to 2-4 on the season.
Senior
Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and junior
Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) pitched an inning each of relief to help seal the victory.
For the Jays, senior Anthony Finch supplied a two-run single up the middle in the third, while junior Nate Albers blasted a shot out of the park in the bottom of the first inning and sophomore William Quigley had an RBI groundout. Junior Christian Conroy suffered the loss after pitching three innings and allowing nine runs (seven earned) on three seven hits while walking two and striking out two.
Up next, the Privateers will close out the regular season this Sunday when they travel to nearby non-conference opponent Lehman College. Game time is scheduled for noon at the Lightning's South Field on their campus. It was serve as Maritime's final tune-up before the Skyline Conference Tournament opening round game next Wednesday, May 1, at St. Joseph's College of Long Island.
