THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 21, 2013) – On Sunday, Maritime baseball was swept in a doubleheader against the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins, losing the first game 14-3 and the second by a score of 9-8. The Privateers are now 12-19 overall on the season and 6-8 in conference play.

In game one, the Dolphins got the scoring started in the first inning when freshman Keith Schroeher stole home to give Mount St. Vincent a 1-0 lead. Maritime would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when senior Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) hit a solo homer over the centerfield fence.

Eventually the Dolphins would pull away by scoring two more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. They would put the finishing touches on the game by throwing up an eight spot in the seventh inning which would eventually lead to a mercy shortened seven inning victory.

Between both games of the doubleheader, the baseball program paid tribute their graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony. Semler, Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac), Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), Max Lockwood (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), and Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) were all honored by the first base line.

In game two, Mount broke the ice again when they scored three runs in the second inning. Junior Mike Eposito scored on a throwing error by the starting pitcher Myers. Freshman Steven Giustino had a RBI groundout to second and Brodesser scored on a throwing error by sophomore catcher Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach).

Maritime would score one in the fifth when junior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) scored on a pass ball to give the Privateers their first run of the game. In the fourth, The Privateers inched closer when they would score another run on Martinez's single to plate sophomore Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side).

From the beginning of the sixth to the top half of the seventh inning both the Privateers and the Dolphins kept trading single runs but in the bottom half of the inning Maritime would tie the game at five when freshman Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) smoked a two RBI double to right centerfield gap sending the game to extra innings.

In the ninth, Mount St. Vincent would un-tie the game at five when they scored four runs in the inning. Schroeher had the big hit for the Dolphins driving a two RBI single through the left side to give Mount a 9-5 advantage.

In the bottom half of the inning the Privateers would not back down when they scored three runs in the inning. Doerbecker drove in two runs on a single to get the team within one but senior reliever Rich Dionisio got sophomore Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist) to fly out to centerfield to end the game.

The Privateers will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 for a conference matchup against the Yeshiva Maccabees. First pitch is at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
