PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 20, 2013) – Maritime baseball swept a doubleheader away from the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers took the first game by a score of 5-3 and then captured the second faceoff, 4-2. Maritime now improves to 12-17 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
In game one, sophomore
Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) shut down St. Joseph's-L.I. by throwing a complete game. Pfundstein scattered eight hits over the nine innings of work only allowing three runs. He also struck out five and walked three.
The Privateers struck first in the second inning when junior
Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a RBI single that drove in sophomore
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) to make the score 1-0.
In the third, Maritime would put up a three spot on the board. Senior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) scored on a throw to second that was trying to throw out a base stealer. Senior
Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) would eventually score on a failed pickoff attempt to first base. Then Sollin drove in sophomore
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / St. John Baptist) on a RBI single to give the Privateers a 4-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would score two runs in the next inning on a RBI single from senior Kenny Willms and a RBI groundout by sophomore Alex Ras but Maritime would score one more in the fifth keeping control of the game for the rest of the way.
In the second, it was St. Joe's who would break the ice in the fourth inning when sophomore Anthony Andreani hit a sacrifice fly to score Alex and freshman Joseph Calabrese had a RBI single to make the score 2-0
In the top half of the fifth, Maritime would jump right ahead into the lead putting four runs on the scoreboard. Sophomore
Patrick Kirk's (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) drove in two runs in the inning by smashing a two RBI triple and then would eventually score on a wild pitch. Semler would knock in a run on a RBI single to give the Privateers a 4-2 advantage which would last for the rest of the game.
Junior
Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman
David Ramos (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg) (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) combined to go seven innings. Castagnaro only gave up two runs in his four frames and winning his first game of the season while Ramos allowed no runs in three innings of work earning his first save of the year.
Maritime baseball will be returning home tomorrow to face the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled at 11 a.m.
