OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 14, 2013) – The Maritime baseball squad split a conference doubleheader today against the Old Westbury Panthers. The Privateers took a loss in the first game by the score of 4-0 but managed to win the second game, 7-1. Maritime is now 9-17 overall on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
In game one, the Privateers had a tough time hitting Panthers starter Arismendy Nunez only to manage seven hits against him. Nunez would pitch a complete game shutout, striking out eleven batters and earning his third win of the season.
Freshman
D'Juan Seymour (Nassau, Bahamas/Rabun Gap) went 3-for-4 during the first game and junior shortstop
Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) went 2-for-4 for Maritime. Junior righty
Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, with three walks while falling to 0-4 on the year.
In game two, the Privateers started the scoring early putting up four runs in the second inning. Bauer and senior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) both had two run doubles in the inning to give Maritime a 4-0 lead. That would prove to be enough for senior
Christopher Meyers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) as he went the distance in game two, just allowing three hits, one run (unearned), walked four, while striking out three earning his second win of the year. Maritime would tack on two more runs in the fourth and one more in the seventh to take the second contest by a score of 7-1.
Junior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) had one hit and a walk and scored two runs. Bauer had another nice game at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist) also had a RBI on a bases loaded walk.
Up next for the Privateers are the NYU-Poly Blue Jays. This game is makeup game and will be played on Wednesday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field. The previously scheduled game on this date against Kings Point has been cancelled. This still is an away game as NYU-Poly's home field is still unplayable.
