YAPHANK, N.Y. (March 3, 2013) – The Maritime baseball squad lost both games of a doubleheader at Baseball Heaven today, losing 4-2 in each game. The Privateers had missed opportunities against the Spartans and couldn't cash in to take advantage on some D'Youville mistakes. They fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 2-1.

In game one, Maritime struck first on a RBI single by sophomore Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) scoring senior Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) from third base. D'Youville would eventually tie the game up in the third inning when sophomore Matt Wendling singled to left to drive in sophomore second baseman Jeff Spors.

The fourth inning was where the Privateers let their biggest opportunity get away. The Spartans committed three errors and Maritime scored only one run during the inning on a throwing error by senior Brent Gibbs. D'Youville would eventually take the lead in the next inning, scoring three runs off of Maritime's junior starter Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) and never looked back to take game one.

Niemeyer threw five innings for Maritime, giving up four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six. Junior Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) gave the team two scoreless innings of work, only giving up one hit and striking out three. Gibbs pitched well for the Spartans, hurling six strong innings giving up only two runs on two hits while striking out nine and walking only two.

In game two, D'Youville would quickly score three runs in the first off of Privateers starter, junior Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Freshman Eric Simoncelli drove in two runs on a double and Gibbs scored on a fielding error from left field.

Maritime would score a run in the next inning on a Doerbecker single and would score again in the fourth, but D'Youville would tack on an insurance run in the seventh on sophomore Kyle Taylor's RBI double, leading the Spartans to their second victory of the day.

Freshman pitcher Anthony Olivier went the distance for D'Youville, giving them seven stellar innings while surrendering only two runs on five hits and striking out four.

The Privateer baseball team will be traveling to Lehman College to play the Lightning on Wednesday night, March 6. The game will start at 6 p.m. at the Lightning's South Field.
