THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 24, 2013) – The Privateers baseball team split another doubleheader this year, this time coming against the Mount St. Mary Knights. Maritime took the first game by a score of 11-8, the Knights took the second contest, 14-6. Overall Maritime is now 5-12 with a 1-3 record in the Skyline Conference.
In game one, Maritime began the scoring in the second inning when sophomore
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist) hit a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach). Later in the inning, senior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) singled to center field which would drive in freshman
Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) to give the Privateers a 2-0 lead.
The Privateers big inning came in the fifth when they put a seven spot on the board. The inning was highlighted by sophomore
Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side)'s (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) grand slam that he drove over the right field wall giving Maritime a 7-1 advantage.
Mount St. Mary were able chip away and make things interesting scoring one in the sixth, four more in the seventh which included senior Michael Morelli homer; his first of two of the game, and two more in the ninth but the Privateers were able to hold off the Knights and gain a game one victory.
Junior
Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) toed the mound for Maritime hurling seven innings giving up six runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out four earning his first victory of the season. Martinez had a big game driving in three runs and going 2-for-4. Doerbecker also knocked in two of his own runs.
Game two was rough right out the gate for the Privateers as the Knights posted three runs immediately off of sophomore pitcher
Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) highlighted by another Michael Morelli homerun. Maritime would answer back though with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning making the score 4-3. Sollin drove in three runs in the inning adding to his great day at the plate.
The Privateers lead would not last long as the Knights came out in the next inning to score two more runs making the score 5-4 and eventually never looking back as they would score three more runs in the third lead off by a Morelli homerun, his fourth of the day and helping lead Mount St. Mary to a 14-6 victory.
Martinez had another productive game going 2-for3 and knocking in two RBIs for Maritime. Sollin was 2-for-5 on the day, scoring three runs and driving in seven overall.
Seniors Alec Seidman and Michael Matuk also drove in two runs apiece for Mount St. Mary in game two. Knight's Morelli was overall 6-for-7 on the day with four homeruns, drove in seven, scored six times and walked twice.
The Privateers return to action when they travel to Kings Point, N.Y. to take on their arch rivals, the Merchant Marine Mariners on March 27. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
