Inside The Series With Purchase
Over the last four years, Maritime has a record of 4-4 against Purchase. Last year, Maritime captured both games of a doubleheader; the first matchup the Privateers won in an 8-5 affair and then in the second contest Maritime cruised to 3-0 victory.
The first game saw the Privateers take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI single by senior
Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and a two-RBI single by
Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur). The Panthers came back to score two in the third and then three more in the fifth to go ahead 5-4, but Maritime answered back in the sixth with four runs, many of them thanks in large part to sloppy fielding by Purchase.
Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) earned the win after pitching a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Game two saw a sparkling pitching performance by then-junior
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore), who threw a complete game shutout, while allowing just four hits. The Privateers got RBIs by now-senior
Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), then-sophomore
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and then-freshman
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist). Panther Miller Lulow suffered the loss after six innings pitched.
Inside The Series With Mount St. Mary
Last year, Maritime lost both games of a conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary. The score of game one was 11-4, while the outcome in game two was a 10-3 loss.
Longo was Maritime's top performer, going 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bauer scored a team-high three runs over the two games, while Galli and
Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Edmonds C.C.) and
Eddie Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) each recorded an RBI.
Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) was the pitcher on the losing side in game one, giving up six runs on four hits in 2.2 innings, while Myers suffered his first loss of the year, lasting 4.1 innings and giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits.
