BROOKLYN, N.Y. (December 7, 2013) – The Maritime basketball team got a combined 42 points from juniors T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) and Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) in a balanced offensive attack as the Privateers defeated NYU-Poly by the score of 92-79 on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the big numbers put up by the pair of juniors, freshman Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) contributed with 12 points, Kevin Heine (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) put in 10 of his own, senior Nick Dunbar (Queens, N.Y./Information Technology) had eight points as did sophomore Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville).

The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead but Maritime answered just 90 seconds into the game with their first of 11 three-pointers on the afternoon as McNamara drilled a shot from downtown. NYU-Poly took a 4-3 lead and that turned out to be the last lead of the day for the Blue Jays as the Privateers took the game over from there.

Freshman Emmett Keane (Maspeth, N.Y./St. John's Prep) gave the team a 5-4 lead with a jumper off a pass from Heine. The jumper ignited a 13-2 run for Maritime as its lead ballooned up to 16-6. At 13:11 of the half, Maritime responded to the first NYU-Poly converted basket by stepping back and putting up another three-point basket by Gibson to take an 11-point edge.

The lead remained at that level for several minutes as the sides went basket-for-basket in the heart of the first half. Freshman Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) then pulled back for a jumper with 8:18 to go to put Maritime ahead 31-18.

Later in the half, Dunbar picked up a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining to give the Privateers a 50-31 lead. NYU-Poly sank a pair of baskets in the final 60 seconds and sent the game into halftime with 15 points separating the teams.

In the second half, both sides split the first 22 points of the half. With 15:36 left in regulation, Halligan put up another three-pointer to give Maritime a 64-47 lead. A 9-2 run for Maritime flourished the lead to 75-52 as the Privateers took total control of the game off of Corley's three-point basket.

NYU-Poly refused to go down quietly as the Blue Jays attempted the difficult climb back into the game bit slowly chipped the lead back down into the teens. NYU-Poly continued to foul in hopes of getting back within 10 points but time worked against the Blue Jays, while Maritime continued to tack on its free throws.

The final horn sounded with Corley pulling down his 6th rebound of the afternoon to go along with his 22 points and nine assists as he fell one helper shy of his second double-double of the year.

Maritime ended the game shooting 47.3% from the floor for its second highest total of the season and highest in Skyline Conference games. The team also hit 29 free throws to fall just two shy of the modern record of 31 boards set two seasons ago also at NYU-Poly.

The Privateers (2-4, 1-2 Skyline) will take the next few weeks off from the court as finals week begins on Maritime's campus this Monday. The next game will be the last one of 2013 as it takes place at 1 p.m. against Randolph on New Year's Eve. NYU-Poly (1-5, 0-2 Skyline) will take the court again tomorrow for a noon-start against SUNY-ESF in a non-NCAA matchup against the Mighty Oaks.
