Scouting the Privateers
The Privateers come into Saturday's game with a loss under their belt in their last game, however the team does enter with a pair of consecutive wins at home against Anna Maria and Castleton State.
The running game has been the focal point of the Maritime offense throughout the majority of the season, and it is expected to be once again against Mount Ida. Junior Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's) leads the team in rushing with 796 yards as he has picked up just fewer than 100-yards per game, including six touchdowns to lead all out of the backfield.
Senior Frank Laino (Rockaway, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) and junior Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) have also been key cogs in the running game with a combined 624 yards on 74 carries. Laino has reached the end zone three times while Caneparo has scored four touchdowns on the season.
One of the key reasons for the success in the running games has been the play of the offensive line. The five-man unit has remained on the field and started as a whole in all but one game together this season. Seniors Robert Marziliano (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Noah Collins (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) anchor the outside, while sophomore J.T. Kennedy (Blauvelt, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) and junior Casey Boos (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) clog the gaps between the outside linemen and center Andrew Cosby (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon).
On the opposite side of the ball, the Maritime defense had a few hiccups a week ago in the loss to Husson as they allowed 39 points, a season-high in points allowed against league opponents. This came a week after its best performance a week prior against Castleton in which the team allowed just one score.
Leading the team on the defensive side of the ball has been junior linebacker Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) who still leads the team with 79 total tackles. His 53 solo tackles are 27th best in the nation. He's also third on the team with two sacks, and also has three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries.
Up front and leading the team in sacks has been junior defensive end Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) with his five for a total loss in 27 yards. Classmate Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) is second on the team with 2.5 sacks. Sophomore linebacker Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) is also amongst the team leaders with 5.5 tackles for a loss amongst his 50 tackles this year.
On special teams, sophomore John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) and Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) continue their success and look to finish the season strong in the last two games. Check out the paragraph earlier in the release on how their seasons have progressed.
Scouting the Mustangs
Mount Ida enters as winners of three of their last four games, with its lone loss coming against Norwich a week ago at home by the score of 38-19. The Mustangs face a tough final two games of the season against Maritime on Saturday and Husson a week from Saturday in Maine.
Mount Ida has been led offensively by quarterback Jawad Yatim, who has completed 125 of his 217 passes for 1,712 yards entering the game this weekend. Yatim has 14 passing touchdowns, and also nine interceptions as he averages 214 yards per game in the air. His two favorite targets are senior Jordan Hyman and freshman Matt Greenman, who have comined for 74 catches and 1,194 yards and nine receiving touchdowns.
On the ground, sophomore Melquan Pinkney is the team's top back with 103 carries and 515 yards on the ground including three scores. Second on the team is junior Chris McNally with 279 ayards on 99 carries and a pair of scores. The duo have combined for two fumbles apiece when their numbers have been called this season. Yatim also has five fumbles charge to him on his 72 rushing attempts this season.
The defense is highlighted by a trio of juniors, including leading tackler Kaylin Smithson who has 56 wrap-ups this season which includes a pair of sacks on his five tackles for loss this season. Jovan Wilkins is second on the team with 53 tackles while Anthony Sankers has 49 tackles from his spot on the defensive line. Wilkins also leads the unit with four interceptions from in the secondary. Sophomore defensive lineman Dominque Spaulding has a team-leading 8.5 tackles for loss this season.
On special teams, Greenman also handles the punting when he's not catching passes on offense. He has 32 punts for just fewer than 1,100 yards this season, which includes six pinned inside the opponents' 20-yard line. The kicking game has been a struggle this season, but the call usually goes to freshman Nick Muccia who is 0-for-1 on field goal attempts and 6-for-11 on extra points. Senior Joe Casey has also been called on several times this season after coming over from the soccer pitch earlier this season for the Mustangs.
